McGahee: Rehab on schedule

‘When the Bills drafted McGahee, team officials said he likely will open the season on the physically unable to perform list. Such a move would allow McGahee to continue to rehab while leaving open the possibility of activating him between Weeks 10-14. "It’s a secret," McGahee said of when he will debut. "Everyone’s just going to have to wait and see."’

Predicting how each NFL team will finish this season

Outlook: Miami has improved an already excellent defense by adding linebacker Junior Seau, safety Sammy Knight and tackle Jeff Zgonina. New England added pass-rushing linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, but there are concerns about the running game. Buffalo has improved its defense, but Josh Reed must prove he’s a capable No. 2 receiver. The Jets lost too many key players.

Divine intervention

‘Could Frank Reich really have been a fine, admirable human being worthy of God’s favor on Jan. 3, 1993, day of the 35-3 comeback, and then have become a despicable person deserving of divine retribution by Jan. 31, 1993, day of Reich’s embarrassment in the Super Bowl? It seems a lot more likely he just had a really good outing in one game and a really bad outing in another.’

Dean Cain: Simply a Superhero

‘As Cain became famous, his former coach Marv Levy came up with one of his best-ever lines. One week, the Bills were getting ready to face an opponent that someone in the media had called a "superteam." "How many of you remember Dean Cain?" Levy asked his players in the locker room. A few guys raised their hands. "Well," Levy said, "we CUT Superman!"’

Sam Gash chuckles when pondering how life goes in circles.

At 34, Gash is confident he still has some bruising blocks left in him. He replaces pass-catching fullback Larry Centers and is a clear signal that the Bills want to run the ball better and control the clock after getting into far too many shootouts in 2002.

“I think it attracted me here,” he said of the philosophical change. “I said, ‘If that’s what you want, I can do it.’ I’ve always prided myself on being one of the tough guys out there and enjoying the contact, and in the power running game, that’s what it’s all about.”

These 10 unheralded moves could supply just the boost a team needs

* Dick LeBeau to Buffalo – Most people overlook the fact that the Bills not only brought in Takeo Spikes, Jeff Posey and Sam Adams, but they also snagged LeBeau, a defensive mastermind, to be an assistant coach and help still-somewhat-green DC Jerry Gray devise a perfect defense. LeBeau’s influence should pay dividends, especially in the secondary, where the Bills have a handful of younger guys looking for a boost over the hump. It may not be as obvious, but LeBeau’s presence could make all the difference for this defense.

Cornerback giving back

‘“For me to come back here and work with some of the kids in my hometown was long overdue,” Winfield said. “I think it’s very important to give these talented kids a chance to meet someone who played on the same fields as they did. I’m hoping that they can look at me and see that if you work hard, you can be successful, not only on the football field, but in life.”’

Injury could cloud Bills' sunny forecast

‘Bledsoe launched 610 passes last season. Alex Van Pelt, the veteran No. 2 quarterback, threw two, completed both for a total of five yards. Alex is 33, two years older than Bledsoe. He almost retired three years ago, putting his house on the market then taking it off and unretiring after Doug Flutie suffered a groin injury in the first week of training camp.’
