Campbell's Soup and the NFL Tackling Hunger

In 1997, Campbell’s Chunky soup established "Tackling Hunger," an annual hunger relief program. This program weighs each selected NFL team’s "chunkiest" linemen and "hungriest" up-and-coming players during training camp to generate donations on behalf of their team.

"I forget how many years I’ve been doing this, I’ve done it for a couple of years," said Ruben Brown. "Last year we had Pat Williams help us, this year I got Mike Williams."

Bills tight end Campbell anxious to face former team

”’I’d be lying to you if I said it didn’t mean anything,” Campbell said after Thursday’s practice in suburban Rochester. ”It’s only a scrimmage and you try to be smart. But at the same time, I want to play well.”’

Training camp billboard

‘”You gotta have game to wear red shoes,” Moulds agrees. “If you’re a guy on the team who can make plays, then you can earn the red shoes. Kevin Thomas came to me last year at the Green Bay game and asked me if he could wear red shoes. I told him, “You’ve got to get an interception first.’ So he got an interception and got the right to wear the red shoes.”‘

Massive tackle Williams striving for flexibility

‘"Mike does not have an eating problem and never really has," Jones said. "You’d be amazed how little he eats. He’s not a gorger or anything like that, where you’re trying to fight the demons. That’s not a problem at all."’

Training Camp Report

‘Clements and Toine looked casual, almost as though they were going at 50%. Toine had an opportunity for a pick and Clements got lost in the sun on a left field underthrown bomb from Bledsoe to Moulds. Eric caught it as clements held and then dragged him down, perhaps the most exciting moment of the day.’

Focus on free safety

‘Reese, who started 15 games for the Broncos last year after four seasons with Dallas, knows what he needs to do. ” I need to make some plays and make some things happen and make my presence felt,” he said. ” I have to separate myself. That’s what training camp is for. You don’t know who’s going to start and that’s what it takes each time I step out here.”‘

Tight end psyched for visit

‘” I was kind of like dumbfounded,” he said. ” There’s two sides of it. One side, you’re not wanted. The second side, you are wanted. You have to decide which side is stronger."’

Ticket sales brisk for scrimmage with Bills

‘More than 20,000 have bought tickets for Saturday’s 10 a.m. scrimmage against the Bills. The club expects a crowd of 30,000, maybe more, in Cleveland Browns Stadium.’

Call came at right time

‘He said his release from the Bills caught him by surprise. He thought he had heard Buffalo general manager Tom Donahoe tell him he was returning for another season.’

Boston Globe | Jul 31, 2003

In short, Centers did his homework

‘Drew Bledsoe likes to throw long. Tom Brady likes to throw short. Centers is the most prolific pass-catcher out of the backfield in NFL history. Do the math.’

Boston Herald | Jul 31, 2003

Centers thinks the system is real good catch

‘”The system fits well,” said the NFL’s all-time leader in running back receptions (808 for 6,691 yards). “It gives me an opportunity to catch a lot of footballs.”‘

Providence Journal | Jul 31, 2003

Another Big Grab

‘A three-time Pro Bowl choice, most recently for the 2001 Bills, Centers turned 35 June 1. He said several teams were interested in him, but the Patriots, who signed him to a one-year contract for the veterans’ minimum of $750,000, seemed the best fit because Centers likes their coaching staff and the way they use their running backs.’

Hartford Courant | Jul 31, 2003

Patriots sign vet Centers

‘”That’s not to knock or criticize anyone, and it was just a deal where Drew was much more comfortable and much more successful going down field than the quarterback the previous year.”‘

Springfield Republican | Jul 31, 2003

Center of attention

‘”Two years ago, I was in the Pro Bowl and was very productive on a not-so-good team,” Centers said. “When we got the new offensive coordinator in, and Drew Bledsoe, the combination of the two probably kept me from being as productive as I was before.”‘

Bills Defensive Backs Starting To Ball Hawk

‘It’s a good thing for Driver he showed well today, because Battles could put Driver off the roster.’
