yall
Which is why "degrees" exist already. Try again. Settle down Beavis - I disagreed with a point he made (about motivation not being a factor), I wasn't necessarily arguing in favor of hate crime laws. Go back and read again. No, it's simply a quote from "Beavis and Butthead" that I use on occasion.
Pine Barrens Mafia
How does the law specifically create protected classes? To my knowledge (and I could be mistaken) the laws simply says you cannot target someone because of their race, religion, orientation, etc. Which means that implicitly, anyone who's black or gay or mormon could claim "hate crimes" took place, and claim special status. Sorry, I am not buying into that philosophy.

Sorry, I am not buying into that philosophy. Actually, by it's definition, there isn't a person alive who couldn't claim that a hate crime took place. Like I said before - I don't think the laws are necessary, a good idea, or that they are applied fairly. On that we probably agree. But I cannot emphasize enough that the notion these laws specifically protect minorities and not white heterosexuals is a logical fallacy.
GG
What about equal protection for geeks and nerds? When a gang beats and kills an honor student, that's a hate crime against wearers of broken horned rimmed glasses.

While nerdiness may not normally be thought of as a disability, try telling that to a geek trying to get laid on prom night.

ieatcrayonz
Here's a Hate crime. He consulted his doctor and a specialist, both of whom believed his testicle could be brought down again in surgery. It wasn’t until he woke up afterwards that he discovered the doctors were wrong — the force of the assault had caused his testicle to rupture. It had to be removed and will be replaced by a prosthetic before Christmas. See this is the problem with national health care. The government only gives out the nuts at Christmas so you think they are a gift. Your taxes paid for that nut!!!
