3 years in a row we drafted a DE

Aaron Schobel - 123 Games - 3 INT - 71 Sacks - 317 tk - 132 asst - 19 FF

Ryan Denney - 100 Games - 23.5 Sacks - 183 tk - 97 asst - 6 FF - 2 Receiving TDs

Chris Kelsay - 100 Games - 3 INTs - 19 Sacks - 185 tk - 95 asst - 4 FF

Two Questions:

One, why did we do that? Why would we commit to DE in three straight drafts, but never try and get a top one? In the three drafts we selected Clements, Williams, and McGahee in the 1st round. It seems weird that we recognized the blaring need, but never decided to really go for it, reserving the position for the second pick. (It can be argued that aside from the Williams pick, RB and CB were not exactly priorities)

Two, how is it possible that in a back-up position Ryan Denney has managed more sacks than Kelsay? How is that even possible?

Maybe they found someone better to use their first round pick on in those drafts then what was available at that time at DE?

They have other rounds of the draft because there are still good players left. Between the Bills #1 picks those years, and the drafting of those 3 players, were there really that many better DE's available that were better then the players the Bills selected with their #1 pick? Clements was a good pick, even McGahee, if he were to have had the same work ethic/determination that he did during rehab on the field for Buffalo, It would have been a great pick. Before his injury he was projected to be one of the top picks in the draft.

People put too much stock in the draft and draft position. Theres always going to be someone who may have been a better choice, or could have filled a need a little better, or in hindsight would have been a better choice, thats just the way it works. The draft is a crapshoot, if not, guys like Brady wouldn't have lasted in the draft as long as he did.

Lots of good questions.

1.) Denney is a better pass rusher than Kelsay. Kelsay has always been solid against the run, this is why the bills still like him as a starter and why Sports Inc like's him too. Denney also is used more in 3rd down situations and obvious passing downs. he should be getting more chances to rush the qb

2.) why did we do it in the 2nd round?

a.) 2003 - mcgahee was somewhat necessary in that Henry had major character flaws. which we then found out willis had his own. taking kelsay in the 2nd round wasn't a bad pick. the only DEs taken before him were Ty Warren (NE - 20.5 sacks) 13overall, calvin pace 18th (switchted to olb), tyler brayton 32nd OAK 11 sacks, then kelsay at 48th with 19.

He has been better than those taken in front of him but we missed badly on Osi Umenyora taken 10 picks later

b.) 2002 - (worst bills draft ever) - 1st DE was Freeney at 11, bryan thomas at 22 to NYJ with 23sck, charles grant 25 NOR with 45 sacks, kalimba edwards 35th to detroit with 31 sck, 61 denney with 23 sacks. all the best ones taken before we picked, though had we not taken mike williams ..... ok ill stop there. the DE everyone missed on was Aaron Kampan in the 5th

c.) 2001 - VERY deepy year for DEs. Also, was necessary to draft Clements knowing Winfield was headed for FA soon and would collect big (which he did). names of DEs/DTs that went in 1st round - gerrad warren, justin smith, richard seymour, andre carter ,marcus stroud (all top 15 picks), kyle vanden bosch at 34 and Schobel at 46.

*** to note most sacks of this class is Aaron Schobel

*** most INT of this class and 2nd most tackles - Nate Clements

this was one of our best 1st and 2nd rounds (also got T-henry in 2nd) as a franchise. though, i wish we had gotten brees in the 2nd, but knowing bills fans we would get SO mad he sucked for 3 years that we'd want Fitzpatrick in before he blew up in year 4.... oh wait a minute...

he was far better than marv and what we have now

He would have eventually put a winner on the field.

Clements was a good pick because they traded DOWN from 14 to 21 before they selected him, picking up an extra 2nd in the process. A little different than the Levy/Jauron method, no?

Willis was a very dumb selection. Steinbach was there, and the Bills, who sucked, had to wait a full season and 4 games for him to see the field at all. They were not good enough to afford themselves such luxury.

What is the story on DE Chris Ellis? Is he still on the roster? I think there were some personal issues he had to attend to back home. I'm not sure he has been on the field or active roster at all this season. At this point he is another relatively hgh pick who has made little contribution. What a surprise!

Yeah, Yeah, if the Bills took Steinbach instead, things would have all been different, the balance of the AFC East would be changed and it would be Buffalo leading the Division instead of NE. Steinbach proved that on the teams hes been on since being drafted.

Maybe they took the chance on Willis cause they knew that they were not a o-linemen away from being competitive and decided that they could take a chance and possibly have a guy that could have been the #1 overall pick late in the first round and have that solid running back to make them a power running team in a tandem with Henry. That was the original plan, to run a tandem of Henry and Willis. The Bills were one of the teams that started the newer trend of having tandem backs that almost all teams are using now

Isn't this only Ellis's second season? I think he was on a personal leave since the Miami game since his mother died? (I think they said it was his mother). Ahead of him right now are 4 other DE's (Schobel, Kelsay, Denney, and Maybin)

Michael Strahan - 2nd round - 216 games - 141.5 sacks

Osi Umenyiora - 2nd round - 78 games - 41.5 sacks

Justin Tuck - 3rd round - 58 games - 24.5 sacks

Nothing wrong with getting pass rushers in the 2nd round or later, you just have to get the right guys.
