Gerry Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 of the Bills changing to red helmets, and of their first of two back-to-back 2-14 seasons. Head coach George "Kay" Stephenson decided to change the helmet color from white to red prior to the 1984 season, insisting that the change would aid Buffalo quarterbacks in finding receivers down field when playing division opponents wearing white helmets. Of course, it didn't work, but the Bills continue to wear red helmets to this day. When hired, Stephenson was surprised to get the job, claiming that Bills owner Ralph Wilson "never explained his reasons for selecting me." He is the former Bills coach most like DJ, a decent man always gracious in defeat and focusing on getting problems corrected, but never able to get the job done.
