Evidently the dad "built" this contraption and left it unattended, but tethered with his children in the back yard. The family was featured on "wifeswap" and he's an amatuer scientist.

Yeah, this isnt' going to probably end very well. Hopefully... maybe the dad is just a media attention whore and set this hoax all up to gain publicity for his "storm chasing group."

Somebody on the radio opined that the kid might have accidentally released it, then ran away and hid.

Another said that there wouldn't be enough helium in that contraption to heft the weight of a six year-old.

There's all kinds of conjecture, speculation and opining going on out here on the local news coverage. It didn't take long for the ABC affiliates to dig up the wife swap footage and start airing it. I realize these shows are slanted to portray families as polar opposites, but the family involved with this accident certainly is portrayed to have a "devil-may-care" attitude. The dad and mom are portrayed (maybe correctly) as a couple of wack-jobs as well.

I'm really holding out hope this ends well, but...

I guess we can file this tribe in the "media whores" file; along with those looney :P ers with 8 kids, Rosie O'Donnell, Al Sharpton and Big Don Trump. :wallbash:

Well this was almost as exciting at the OJ/AC chase on the LA freeway...

Well this was almost as exciting at the OJ/AC chase on the LA freeway...

This was on CNN today:

Dad: Did you hear us calling you”

Balloon Boy: Yes

Dad: Why didn’t you come out...

Balloon Boy: “Because you guys said we did this for the show”

Looks like it really was a hoax.

After watching the "saucer for a few minutes, I realized that he wasn't in it.

On Mythbusters, they looked at the myth of a kid being carried away like a bunch of balloons.

They had a 30-40 pound girl , maybe 4-6. It took HUNDREDS of normal helium filled party balloons to raise her inches off the ground. They had to do it in an old hangar.
