A discussion on QB play

Recommended Posts

There was a GREAT discussion on QB play by Trent Dilfer last week on The Herd. Dilfer was talking about how QB's need to learn how to throw the ball at the NFL level. His progression basically went like this:

1. In high school, the QB learns to throw the ball to the WR after he makes his cut.

2. In college, the QB learns to throw the ball to the WR as he's making his cut.

3. At the pro level, a QB has to learn to throw the ball where the WR will be before he makes his cut.

Think about this as you watch Edwards play QB this year. There has been a LOT of discussion about TO and other WR's being open but Trent not pulling the trigger. It's my contention that this ability to throw before the cut or where the WR is going to be is what's killing Edwards.

Dilfer also went on to say that if a QB is picked off enough or doesn't trust his WR's then he'll hold the ball too long, takes sacks or go for the checkdown. That results in a downward spiral that can only result in poor overall play and lack of production.

That my friends, is our QB in a nutshell.
