stuckincincy
In fact, there are quite a few QBs that just couldn't make it for one reason or another. Some of the notables: Ryan Leaf Todd Marinovich Andre Ware Akili Smith Add ex-CIN QB David Klinger to that list. He never had a chance. Thrown in as a rookie behind an OL that couldn't block a gimpy gnat, he got pounded to a pulp. Owner Brown turned down Ditka's offer of the entire NO 1999 draft for Ricky, to select Akili Smith (who but played 1 year at Oregon). Urban legend here has it that then-HC Bruce Coslet was...beyond...livid. He also got pounded silly, too - but he was a tough player who deserved a better fate. He lasted 17 games - and I smiled when he got cut and walked off with $4 million of Mikie's cash.
ricojes
There have been a lot of QB's that started their careers with bad lines. This is nothing more than a poor excuse, we still should see some positives even with a poor line. But the truth is, TE's just isn't an NFL starting QB. He can make plays when protection is good, but so can any QB. A great QB can make plays under any circumstance. I have lost all faith in TE's and refuse to make excuses for his poor play. In Donavan McNabb's first 5 season's, he only made it completely through 3 because his lines were so bad. In those full seasons, he was sacked 45, 39, and 43 teams. But he was never "shell shocked", good QB's do not get "shell shocked". And if anyone should be it should be DM, dude gets killed back there and is injured all the time. I know the Bills OL is pretty bad at the moment, but it's just an excuse for a very average QB IMO.
Orton's Arm
I dont buy this premise at all. Edwards isnt getting killed back there and the running game has been faily effective. Wilson gave the "line play" excuse the other day too. It doesnt wash, not this year. Um . . . which football team are you watching? The Bills have allowed the second most sacks of any team in the league. The only team which has allowed more--the Packers--has a QB who often holds the ball a long time, and thereby creates a lot of his own sacks. With Butler on IR, the Bills have no one at OT; and there will be plenty of times when a defender arrives at Edwards' blindside without having been touched. I'm not saying that Edwards isn't part of the problem. There's plenty of room for him to improve his own play, bad line or no. But this offensive line has extremely serious problems, beginning at the LT position. I hope to see those problems addressed early in the 2010 draft. Ray
The QBs that fail fail b/c they are bad. Not b/c of poor OL, not enough weapons etc....if you are good you will show that and you will play in the league. All of the above examples were bad QBs. Now whether he crapped the bed and did not want to play, had too greedy of an agent or just got lazy, the Bills could have addressed this issue early and often - if the all important LT position was of any importance to them. Rather it seems that selling tickets is paramount - as evidenced in the fact that they hired a marketing guy, not a football guy for GM. The QBs that fail fail b/c they are bad. The Bills need to pull Trent Edwards and insert Ryan Fitzpatrick. This will happen sooner or later anyway with the number of time TE is being sacked so why not put him in before TE ends up on IR and would not be available in case something happens to Fitz. Trouble is it won't help anything. Fitzpatpatsack was a terrible QB for Cincinnati last year. The worst yards/attempt in NFL history bad. He was brought in because he wasn't a threat to Trent Edwards. Even if Edwards laid a cannon ball sized egg.
