jax bill backer Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Then he should not be an owner at all. Let’s face it, first round QB’s can change the attitude on the team and can have an impact right away. The Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons were two teams that were in dismay a couple years ago. Then when the draft rolled around they picked up Ryan and Flacco. Each of them led there respected teams to the playoffs last year. Flash forward to this year. Even though the season is still rolling, Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford look very composed and promising in their first year. The main point I am trying to get across, is that I think people under estimate first round QB choices because of Losman. So what we got screwed. Bills fans we have seen what a first round QB can do for our franchise (see Kelly). Honestly I think for this team to go forward we need to take a chance and get a QB next year in the first round, but that’s just my opinion. The scary thing is, I think Ralph Wilson might not shell any money on a first round QB. This is what I would tell Ralph about the money situation. “Ralph, many teams have put money into first round QB’s and seen a complete change in their team,” ““In addition to that, Owners have spent the money to make sure that they are willing to join”. If Wilson replied with a “no I won’t spend money on a first round QB”, then I would reply like this. “Mr. Wilson, why is it that every other owner in the NFL would shell out the money for a first round QB, but you simply won’t”. “What makes you so different from the rest of the NFL owners”? I feel if Ralph Wilson is not willing to shell out money for a first round QB, then he does not qualify as an NFL owner because simply every other owner in the NFL would do it no matter how good they think there QB will do.
K-9 Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Where is the evidence that RW WON'T give 1st round QB money? We would have taken Roethlisberger (sp?) if the Steelers didn't and ended up taking and paying for a QB in the 1st round of the same draft, anyway. Is this just another baseless "RW is cheap" theory? GO BILLS!!!

keepthefaith Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Ralph is smart. Would you waste 1st round QB money with Jauron and co. coaching a high 1st round QB? Hell no.
Guffalo Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Yet if he paid a fraction of the money he would spend on a first round, top 5 pick at QB on a quality head coach (see Cowher, Shannahan) who could be had for 4-5 million a year he could improve the franchise. A head coach can improve and develop not just one position, but all positions on the team. Pay the price for a quality head coach, stop shopping the retread/ unproven aisle when looking for a coach

Albany,n.y. Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 I was saying "if" he doesn't There was no reason to say "if", because your theory was baseless to begin with. Ralph has traded 1st round picks for QBs and paid them big bucks twice since 1998 (Johnson & Bledsoe) and traded back into the 1st for Losman. So what you're really saying is "If Ralph doesn't want to do what he's already proven he's willing to do, then..." That's why you deserve to get blasted for starting the string the way you did.

Would probably want at least that much now. Not sure about Cowher but I agree with your point. Doubt RW will ever pay enough to get either. Proven coach would be much less of a gamble than a rookie QB.
Guest three3 Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 of course he is too cheap to pay a top 15 qb. of course jauron would !@#$ the kid's head up. of course russ brandon would take a kid from the west or south. this franchise is !@#$ed, we all know it.

And ole Ralphy boy would tell you to pack your crap and have you escorted from the stadium by security.......... Personally I think he would pony up......but there are so many factors that will play into the situation. Does Edwards show signs of improvement? Does Jauron get canned at year end? Do Modrak and Guy get canned? (Hopefully all do); Does a real GM get put in place? Who is the new coach - and who does he bring in for his staff? What is their opinion of Edwards? What type of offense/defense will they employ? Where do the bills end up picking? Is there a QB worthy of being picked at that point? Is there a better player in a position of need? (OL, DE, LB etc)....... Too many variables at this point. I hope Edwards does turn it around/show improvement. Otherwise we are bound to go through another rebuild and if that includes a rookie qb, we have to hope he turns out to be a good one. It seems like the bills have been just good enough to fall towards the middle of the pack and don't end up with true studs in the draft.

PromoTheRobot Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Are there any other non-existant problems we can worry about? Like if aliens land at RWS? PTR
scoring is not hardy Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Are there any other non-existant problems we can worry about? Like if aliens land at RWS? PTR We all know that Ralph would have to overpay the aliens to land at that dump
birdog1960 Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Are there any other non-existant problems we can worry about? Like if aliens land at RWS? PTR Nope, no problems at all It's all good (and I actually do think we beat the fins Sunday).
Albany,n.y. Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 I hope you realize that a QB salary has skyrocketed since losman, johnson, and bledsoe. It's still in line with other salaries. Look at what McGee got in his new contract: Reported at 4 years $27 million that could be higher with incentives. That's close to $7 million/year for McGee. If Edwards has a good year, he'll get big $ and they won't need to draft a QB in the 1st round. When was the last time the Patriots drafted a QB in the 1st round? -Bledsoe. You only draft a QB in the 1st round when you think you will have a need in a year or 2. When have the Bills last felt that need? -2004 when they picked Losman after the cupboard was bare by the time they picked Lee Evans at 13. Since then, they were commited to Losman through 2006 (they did see enough flaws by then to draft Edwards) and Edwards through at least this year. So your theory would be called totally untested due to lack of meaningful data. Additionally, only Brady Quinn was available to the Bills in the 1st round in a recent year they drafted a QB & right now Edwards is better than Quinn, so you can't fault them for that decision. Personally, I would have pulled the plug on the Losman commitment after 2005 & drafted a QB instead of Whitner, but the Bills weren't prepared to dump JP at that time. Marv loved Jay Cutler, but was not willing to give up on Losman at that time. Money had nothing to do with it.
