Booster4324 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 That'd be cool, thanks. I just ran the disc defragmentor and it left a lot of stuff still un defragmented!! Ok some of this may seem remedial and it is just a cheat sheet, so don't expect miracles but the first one I recommend is http://www.customguide.com/pdf/computertra...k-reference.pdf That is an overview of computer basics. It explains the difference between RAM and HD space as well as a lot of other terms. Start with that (lots of other cool free cheat sheets there for any help desk type people). After you finish that sheet, simply go to Wiki and look up any other terms that confuse you. The wording tends to be poor and lots of overblown sentences (frigging computer nerds) but it is usually correct (if somewhat dated at times). Also if you run Vista or XP here are two more cheat sheets. http://www.customguide.com/pdf/windows-qui...rence-vista.pdf http://www.customguide.com/pdf/windows-qui...eference-xp.pdf
The Dean Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 That'd be cool, thanks. I just ran the disc defragmentor and it left a lot of stuff still un defragmented!! Defragment with this (it's free): http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag Just defragment. Don't click on "Optimize your PC" or anything else it suggests. Just use the free defragmentor.

I may have to send those to a couple of my more confused clients. Thanks
Booster4324 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Nice reference guide, Booster. I may have to send those to a couple of my more confused clients. Thanks Brother I am waiting till the thread is done and then I am going to go back and copy all your links, so we can call it even

Booster4324 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 I should report the post!! Any of that help btw? You are getting good advice. Fez and Dev are being helpful, just speaking a different language...
The Dean Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Plus, you don't need to go the full home server route...it's an extreme way of doing it for those with the funds. I back all my data up on an external hard drive and lock it in a fire-proof safe. Same price as doing it on a Mac. Speaking of external hard drives... Samsung 1 TB external drive, $89.99/Free Shipping with this code: EMCLXNX44 I think it is a one-day offer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...-L0B-_-22152178
Steely Dan Posted September 29, 2009 Author Posted September 29, 2009 Any of that help btw? You are getting good advice. Fez and Dev are being helpful, just speaking a different language... Most definitely. Dev's especially after writing this I'm packing up the computer and sending it back from whence it came. Thanks Deano, but I lack the funds for anything but essentials right now.

Thanks Deano, but I lack the funds for anything but essentials right now. I knew you wouldn't be interested, SD. I just thought I'd add it to the thread for anyone monitoring it. Good luck.
Fezmid Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Thanks Deano, but I lack the funds for anything but essentials right now. Cancel your internet access for a month or two, buy the hardware firewall (technically NAT device), and then re-activate your internet access.
Steely Dan Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 Cancel your internet access for a month or two, buy the hardware firewall (technically NAT device), and then re-activate your internet access. I sell crap on eBay. Need the connection.
Fezmid Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I sell crap on eBay. Need the connection. Library. Seriously dude, you're playing with fire by leaving your machine directly connected to the net.
thebug Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I sell crap on eBay. Need the connection. Someone else could be selling your stuff on ebay if you are not careful.
Just Jack Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I sell crap on eBay. Need the connection. How much does crap go for on EBay? How does size, color and texture matter?
Steely Dan Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 I have the Comodo firewall, Malwarebytes, Noadware, Avira, Registry Wizard and Winpatrol. I can't afford anything else right now. I'm hoping I'm semi protected from hacking. Knock Wood
Steely Dan Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 BTW, it's weird how some things survived the re-install and others didn't. I had that Nero program that those Jackasses won't give me the registry for and other programs that wouldn't come up. I have Sonic to edit movies and to burn CD's. That survived without the registry. They told me to check my software box and since it came with the computer there isn't a software box for it. However, when I went into the about this version thing the registry number was listed there and I was able to bring it back up. I had a program called Picasa for pictures and I think it was free on the internet. I didn't have to register it and when I opened it for the first time after the crash every photo that had been on computer before the crash came up and I was able to put them into separate files in my picture folder. I don't understand how some crap survives and other crap doesn't. At least some of my stuff is recoverable!
Fezmid Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I'm hoping I'm semi protected from hacking. You're really not.
