SouthGeorgiaBillsFan Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 So far, this year, I think nearly all of the sacks have been coverage sacks and/or because Trent held the ball too long. No Dean. The only two sacks that really matter occurred on the final drive against the Patriots, and Demetrius Bell was burnt like toast both times. Trent did not even have time to finish his drop before he was clobbered from the back side. I'm not complaining about the blocking at all, and other than that series everything has been so far beyond expectations as to have me and many others here thrilled for sure. But on those two plays, when it really mattered, the onus was squarely on Bell, who was beaten badly.
Pete Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I always thought Runyon was one of the most overrated players the past decade. Every time I saw him play announcers built him up, but he was a turnstile. Strahan embarrassed Runyon every time I saw them play. Now he is old and injured- umm... no thank you
DrDawkinstein Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Typical cheap Wilson move Typical kneejerk, shortsighted thread post
Alphadawg7 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Just an FYI to those clamoring about spending money: The 5 lowest payrolls in the NFL last year were: Packers Colts Patriots Ravens Chiefs 4 of those teams are amongst the better teams in the NFL and are SB contenders...so who the hell cares about how much money a team spends...FYI, Bills were 16th in the NFL in payroll and no where near the cheapest
PromoTheRobot Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I can't stand it; will Wilson ever spend some money on this team? Runyon is a proven tough vet, but instead we sign a no-name unproven rookie. The rebuilding project that will never, never, never, end. All Wilson did was not sign some washed up reject that you but no one else thinks is any good. If Ralph is so cheap then how did we sign T.O.? Check your facts before you rant. PTR

It has more to do whether you franchise a guy or not and what amount of salary goes on the books. Pats, Packers, and Colts have QB's with huge contracts spread over time. I suspect a team like Carolina will have a high payroll this year due to the franchising of Peppers. In the NFL it is all about who is willing to pay the signing bonus money.

The Packers GM is Ted Thompson. The Colts GM is Bill Polian. The Patriots GM is mostly BB. The Ravens GM is Ossie Newsome. These are all quality personnel people who know how to build a successful franchise. The Chiefs recently hired the primary personnel man of the Pats, Scot Pioli, to take over the struggling Chiefs' operation. The head of the Bills football operation is a marketing specialist. Two of the most influential members in the organization are Littman and Oberdofer (sic) finance people. There should be no surprise why the Bills rank 29 out of 32 in wins over the past decade.
sharper802 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I aggree with passing on Runyon due to age and micro-fracture surgery. Walker is fat lazy slow and was grossly overpaid. If the Bills had not paid him and Dockery so much money foolishly(thanks Marv), Peters is probably still here with the same contract he had. What I can't figure is why Levi Jones has not gotten a call from the Bills or other teams. Anyone know? Is his back that bad? The day he was cut by the Bengals everyone including I believe John Clayton had him signing with Buffalo.
NobesBLO13 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 The thing about the 'cheap' argument I don't get is how much money would a 36 year old damaged goods tackle that 32 teams have passed on command anyway?
Captain Hindsight Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Good thing Ralph didnt want to bring in guys like fred taylor Laveneous Coles Pisa Tinsioma and some guy named Terrell Owens? What a cheap ass! This guy makes a good point. O and im pretty sure we worked out Runyon and yet we still passed on him after we lost our RT fgor the year. Just maybe maybe the OL coach knows more than internet tough guy with the OP
Britbillsfan Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Another point is whether the extra tackle would be expected to see the field at all this season. I have to think Kirk Chambers would be our primary back-up (with some experience) and unless we get really unlucky and lose two more tackles we are unlikely to NEED the services of the experienced guy. This being the case a raw rookie with lots of potential upside who has more chance of contributing in future seasons is probably the best way to go. If we do get desperate later on in the season then there will always be the opportunity to sign one of these old guys to fill in whilst the young guys get more seasoned.
716 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Jesus....I've been lurking on this board for a good 4-5yrs. now and I can't billieve I'm wasting my first post on this thread.... Google is your friend OP 1. Google how much my Ralph spends on players compared to the rest of league. Not just this year either....go back a few "The problem with the organization is that they have not been able to assemble a quality front office. The Packers GM is Ted Thompson. The Colts GM is Bill Polian. The Patriots GM is mostly BB. The Ravens GM is Ossie Newsome. These are all quality personnel people who know how to build a successful franchise. Google how long Russ has been our GM. Are you seriously going to blame him for the past 10 years JOHN? I actually think he's done a pretty ok job so far (psst... google him!!!) 3. Google is your friend. It will save you lot of trouble and at the same time & embarrassment. 4. Here's an idea...lets sign Bruce to help the pass rush & LT for LB depth... 5. ...Nevermind...my keyboard is running out of ink..
Adam Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 who is runyon? Its a typo- he meant fronions- you know, those things they put on burgers at friendly's
BuffaloBill Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Payroll from year to year is misleading. I suspect a team like Carolina will have a high payroll this year due to the franchising of Peppers. In the NFL it is all about who is willing to pay the signing bonus money. True as I looked at this issue and posted in another thread some time ago. If you go back 5 years the Bills have averaged towards the high side of the bottom quartile of the league. However, they also did not have an elite QB and we all know they got their LT for RT money for most of that span. Also deflating their salary spend is youth. Teams with more vets will by contract spend more. Finally, what is also hidden is what the Bills may have been willing to pay in the form of additioanl bonuses and performance awards that were not triggered. I would not call Ralph cheap as much as I might call him prudent. the only area where I would like him to spend more is in coaching.
MarkyMannn Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Its a typo- he meant fronions- you know, those things they put on burgers at friendly's Or Funyons
BobDVA Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Yeah, I'm pretty worried, more about Jonathon Scott at RT. The guy couldn't cut it in Detroit which should tell you something. Alas, the line has held up decently well. Some of the sacks can be attributed to Edwards holding the ball too long, but he's nowhere near as bad as that as other qbs that we've had in the past... Oh you mean those well known talent evaluators in Detroit. Is it that he could not cut it in Detroit, or they just plain missed it?
MRM33064 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I don't think it's entirely fair to call Ralph "typically cheap" when it comes to player signings. I always got the sense Ralph was willing to open his wallet for players, just not so much for front office personnel and coaching. My sense is that we have more example of players that, in retrospect, we overpaid as "great players" (who weren't, or aren't) than "great players" we either lost or didn't sigh because we weren't willing to pay for them ... but I'm happy to be shown otherwise ... just a sense.

If you were a GM, your team would be bankrupt and loaded with players past their prime.
