State official to send to Arafats funeral???  Does who we send represent our stance on pursuing peace in the region?  i cannot wait  for responses on the board....

Bush went out of his way to avoid shaking his hand and a couple of years ago publically called for his removal from leadership of the Palestinian Authority. I'd be surprised if he sent anyone, unless it was more in the interest of reaching out to Arafat's successors than actually paying respects.

Ask a decent question...get all this stevestojan...try to think about the question separate from you own feelings...use your minds

You've yet to tell us who you would send? Use your mind.

are you really the person to wage war on people that throw out a periodic sarcastic post?

this just in...the house with glass windows just went on the market.

I have never read any post you have wrote that had an ounce of sarcasm

Jimmy Carter

I'd like to send a whiskey 87, but that's not the right answer. Carter might not be a bad choice. Now is not the time to further allienate the Palestinian people. Need to make some kind of positive gesture.

Why not send John Kerry? We have no use for HIM here.

Because technically, protocol dictates we have to bring him back...

I'm not sure about Carter. On the one hand, he established the Camp David accords. On the other hand...he established the Camp David accords. I mean...even though brokering peace between Israel and Egypt was an excellent legacy for his presidency, isn't it possible that the Palestinians may take umbrage at the gesture for feeling abandon by Egypt, and therefore find Carter's presence more of an insult than anything else?

Just spitballing there...I could be wrong...

I heard on the radio this AM that they're sending a staffer from State below Armitage, who's dealt with Mid East politics. Forget the name. Even that is too high of a person to send to a murderer's funeral.

Hell, nothing is going to give me a downer today. It's Vets Day, and a grave cancer has finally been eradicated from this world.

Time to double up on the Nyquils.

That is an excellent question and one I am sure has been the subject of some teeth gnashing at the White House and State Department.

I think we should send whoever it is besides the Prez and the Veep that would send the strongest message that we take the Palestinian claim to a homeland very seriously. We do not need to convince Israel of our sincerity, objectivity nor the depth of our committment to their security. We do have a long way to go to convince Palestinians and other Arabs that they can trust us as a mediator not to sell them out or just parrott whatever positioin Israel would like us to take. This decision has to be made with the future in mind and not based on whether we think Arafat was the worst criminal of the last 40 years or a nationalist patriot or something inbetween.

I beg to differ. You show exactly what you thought of Arafat by sending in Travis Henry. But in your first meeting with Abbas next week, you send Powell. That's the message.
