The Poojer
I understand a pitcher cannot get a win until he completes 5.3 innings....today Joba pitched 3, had a 3-2 lead, Aceves comes in to relieve him, pitches 3 maintains the lead...Aceves gets the win.....what is the logic in that? The Poojer
answered my own question....so really logic isn't a factor in it at all Starting pitchers, however, have an additional requirement. If you are the starting pitcher, you MUST pitch five COMPLETE innings, recording 15 outs, to earn a "win". Even if your team wins the game, and even if your team scored the winning run while you were the pitcher of record; if you don't make it through 5 innings, you don't get the win. In this case, the win is awarded to the relief pitcher who, in the opinion of the official scorer, turned in the best performance. That's a judgement call, but in most cases, the "best performance" is obvious. For that matter, in most cases, there's only one relief pitcher to pick from. cantankerous
I thought it was 5 innings minimum...and he has to have the lead when he leaves the game to be eligible for the win, if the other team ties it, he's no longer eligible.
