Lv-Bills Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm thinking Brian Orakpo. I think most people here would have picked Orakpo BEFORE this Maybin incident we're in now. Oh, and I'm a Penn State fan. I was actually pissed we didn't take Orakpo.
Estro Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm with Mike Mayock, he really opened my eyes to Robert Ayers. May not be the pass rusher this team was looking for, but I think he will be the best all around DE out of the draft. I would've been very happy to have him as a Bill.
Wilson from Gamehendge Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I would have taken Michael Oher, Alex Mack, Clay Matthews or Larry English. I would have rather concentrated on the O-Line in the 1st and 2nd round...then I would have drafted Lawrence Sidbury in the 3rd or 4th, as a DE/OLB like Maybin is projected to be.

Yes, as I've mentioned several times, Lawrence Sidbury was available when we drafted Shawn Nelson in the 4th round. I think both of them are going to be excellent players but I put a premium on pass rushers. As far as the original question, I liked Robert Ayers the best of all the DE hybrids...even though he's a classic DE who Denver is using as a hybrid. I loved him as a pure DE. I also would have had no problem drafting Alex Mack and then still drafting Eric Wood. This would have been somewhat similar to what the Jets did a few years ago in drafting D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold in the first round of the same draft. For me, we would then have gone in a different direction with the Andy Levitre pick but I'm happy we got Levitre. The guy I wanted most at #11 was Robert Ayers. Let me say though that we have zero idea how any of these guys will turn out, recent results notwithstanding. Even those who are cursing our selection of Maybin may be eating their words at some point (hopefully soon).

N.Y. Orangeman Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I would have taken Maybin. Think long-tem..
MartyBall4Buffalo Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I would have taken Maybin. Think long-tem.. Yeah I agree but I would've taken everette brown over byrd in the 2nd rd. Contrary to Jauron's defensive philosophy about corners. I believe you can never have enough defensive ends in the NFL.
KOKBILLS Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I wanted Robert Ayers at #11...But I thought any DE would be OK...Just thought Ayers would end up being the better Pro...He certainly is now... Have to say I can't believe Maybin is not in yet...This is a complete joke... Glad He's such a great Kid...
AF88Bills Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Pettigrew, Orakpo, or one of the LTs on the board are the guys I wanted them to take. I definitely didn't want another undersized defensive player... while other teams are taking 270-290 lb DE's, we're taking 238 lb'ers who quickly bulk up to 249....who's to say the guy didn't have a temp creatine, or some sort of GNC supplement bulk put on. Also, he's barely 249lbs, which is still small for a DE.
JOHNNYFAIRPLAY Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Orakpo...he's better. I like Maybin, but he's sooooooooooooo un-proven. But yes, Orakpo is a better player......we'll see.
ddaryl Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I was on the Orakpo train early this offseason, and I was a little dissapointed we didn't select him. Maybin is a project Orakpo challenges to satrt ASAP
qwksilver Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm thinking Brian Orakpo. Oher, Wood, & everette brown would've been a nice trio. But meh, what do we know.
cowtippur Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Even with the signing issues, I still like the Maybin pick. He is a specialist. His skill is speed. Training camp won't change that. It would help him gain other skills, but his speed will be there. I think long term, he will be a solid impact player.

This much I agree with...I did not see Maybin as a challenger for a Starting Spot in 09...But He'll be on the Field for most 3rd Downs doing what He does best...Putting pressure on the QB with his speed/1st step...I think it remains to be seen if Maybin will fill out to an every down DE in a 4-3...He seems to be a perfect fit for a 3-4 OLB...But the Bills don't run the 3-4, at least they don't this Year...So for now He's nothing more than a Pass Rush specialist...That is of coarse IF He ever Signs...

Agree completely. Orakpo is proven in this league and a better player. What were the Bills thinking? Can we end this thread and re-assess it in two years please? Half your posts are gonna sound ridiculous by the end of this season- how soon a player signs and how they look in one pre-season game has absolutely nothing to do with how their careers are gonna pan out! Come on guys.

Come on guys. Geez, if we can't speculate on the future, guess we should shut this board down! I along with many others was hoping for Orakpo on draft day. Who knows if Orakpo & agent would have pulled same stunt if they were picked # 11 and Crabtree was holding out. I think I sound like a broken record every year, but agents are given way too much power and manipulate the players (you can even look at what Scott Boras was trying to do with the Nat's # 1 pick in baseball). With that said, I hope Maybin gets in soon and helps out our pass rush, b/c damn do we need it.
The Dean Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm thinking Brian Orakpo. That's who I would have picked, to begin with. But this kind of exercise is rather worthless, don't you think? You have to use the info you have at the time.
