I mean what does a team do if they are unimpressed, and the guy wants more money then most veterans make in this league? I guess you pay and hope for the best or you trade him! Yes, even in a 23-0 loss the other night, they still can't stop talking about the guy's play and how he will be the cornerstone of the defense for the next 10 yrs. I can see the geniuses in Washington going gaga over a rookie who had one solo (after a McGahee 5 yard gain) and one assisted tackle (on a Joe Flacco scramble), and a QH hurry (on 2nd string QB Troy Smith), as being the stuff of legends. Maybin and his agent are clearly angling for what Crabtree is looking for, and it's not even debatable at this point, since Arrington has come out and said that Crabtree is holding things up (...on their end). The Bills have no reason to want to see what Crabtree signs for, both because of the (lost) time it will take for that to happen plus the (out of proportion/slot) money he'll get. His value is between THESE 2 picks, not what Crabtree is going to make. His value has been set. It is between 20 mill and 28 mill. The more this drags out I blame Maybin for not firing his agent and going with somebody else. Another case of a player getting bad advice from a wannabe high roller agent . Andre Smith--weight and possible discipline/attitude issues; suspended for bowl game for undisclosed issues; stock dropped drastically for walking out of the combine 2. Michael Crabtree--didn't run the 40 due to injured foot; questions about being a system player; and more injuries 3. Aaron Maybin--concerns whether 1 year wonder; tweener, not sure if can maintain a DE's weight when he's at that threshold now Makes you wonder if they wanna cash out early just in case they don't they don't end up performing and warranting a follow on top tier contract. At this point you have to question Maybin's judgment, period. First, he associates himself with an idiot like Arrington (yes, he's an idiot, and one of the most overrated "potential superstars" I've ever seen). Then, he ties his contract negotiations to a player who has taken an untenable position. We get an AP story about how Maybin "cried" during the Bills' first preseason game, but here we are 10 days later and he still hasn't told his agent to "get it done" and start his career when every player around him has signed? Why can't these guys get some good, common sense advice from the people they trust? Why can't someone explain to Maybin that his NEXT contract is the one that will set him up for life, if he's the player he believes he is? Maybin's agents are, Joel Segal and Chafie Fields. Yes, they who represent Michael Vick. They're probably still getting a rub-down in Atlantic City and can't focus on Aaron's little issue. dave mcbride Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 I assume Chafie Fields works for Joel Segal, which means that for all intents and purposes, he is Joel Segal (indeed, Segal's agency lists Maybin as a client: http://www.experiencebest.com/sports/football). It all goes to show that when you're drafting in the first round, who the player's agent is should weigh into your decision. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that they wouldn't have drafted Crabtree even if they had a need at the WR spot given who his agent is (Eugene Parker). The Bills haven't had problems getting their picks in camp in recent memory (or distant memory, for that matter), so it's time to start looking at the other side of this SNAFU: Segal. He doesn't appear to have much of a record of holdouts (he's Shawn Nelson and Ashton Yobouty's agent, incidentally), but my understanding is that he's known as a type A agent who isn't the sort to sign a first round contract until both the person ahead and behind are signed. He was Reggie Bush's agent when the story about the free rent broke, although it doesn't appear that he did anything wrong there (it was the previous pair of agents who were culpable, it seems). Anyway, he's got a rep as a very tough agent who is all about signing clients NEXT year - which means that he may not gonna budge until he knows what Crabtree is getting. Does anyone think, for even a second, the Ralph is going to pay Maybin more because of crabtree? Hell no. Ralph is going to tell Maybin to take the #11 money and like it. Maybin will get what the #11 pick is slotted for, something like 5-25-15, and not a penny more. The sooner he accepts this, the sooner we cal all move on. Note: This is NOT a Ralph is cheap spiel. This is pointing out the fact that Ralph decides who gets paid how much, and when they get paid. You get paid what Ralph wants to pay you when ralph wants to pay you. He's not going to break the slotting system for some whiny sniveling B word of a rookie. It didnt work for Peters, and its not going to work for Maybin. If he had such passion for the game and desire to play, then he would fire his agent and get into camp. The 12th pick has signed so there is no excuse. The dude is just greedy. Why bother at this point? Consider Wood to be the first round pick and either trade the rights to Maybin or worst case let him re-enter the draft next year. That's my guess. I think he will be a huge bust so they are trying to milk every guaranteed dollar now since he'll likely be out of the NFL before his first contract expires. The Bills should tell him to f--- off. He can reenter the draft next year and hope to be a late 2d round pick. The money could be better spent elsewhere. Clearly, many agents feel it is more important to get the last nickel out of a deal than it is to get their client into training camp on time. Clearly the Bills are more interested in not over paying than they are in getting their top pick into camp on time. If either side backed away from these agendas, Maybin would be in uniform.
