The Bills have been actively "sniffing around for quarterbacks

BILLS #1

Considering that Jauron is on as hot a seat as one can get, and they are clearly rolling the dice on this season with the T.O. contract, it seems like Vick is the best option. Savvier teams could just roll with what we have and take Bradford next year.

We could be 11-5 with talent alone. However, Jauron will lose four of those games so he can be 7-9 the rest of his life.

therefore, it doesn't matter until Jauron is gone !!!!

I have to say I'm not particularly crazy about this Edwards quote:

“The one play that sticks out in my mind is the last play of the drive (the interception). I need to make sure I don’t turn the ball over like that. ... I need to check the ball down to the backs.”

He checks down too often, IMO. I think he needs to learn to adjust his throw, know when he has limited follow through space, and take the shot, anyway. Trust the receiver to make the play. I'll sacrifice an occasional INT for more downfield production from Trent.

I'm glad he recognizes he made a horrid decision on that throw. He sent it right into the teeth of the coverage and had Evans been fool enough to go get it in a preseason game, he'd have been wrecked by that safety. All this talk about him getting bumped into or pressure making the throw sail ignores the most salient point; it was a flat-out awful read.

I understand that he wanted to get Evans involved to keep him happy on a drive where TO was getting multiple primary looks, but putting the ball in places that will get your receivers hurt will not involve him and it certainly won't make him happy.

Ok, here I go again...

Why in the world would the Bills want Vick. What will he bring to the team other then controversy amongst the fans? Fitz may have a 'noodle-arm' but Vick has more so. Vick can scramble (run the ball well), Fitz isn't too shabby in that area no matter what you think of him. Do we want a backup qb that hasnt played in 2 years, hasnt been able to practise in 2 years or even workout with a historical completion percentage of 50%? Why? You are all victims of the Vick media hype machine. May as well get Lossman back, at the very least he's more of a qb then Vick will ever be.

Forget Fitzgerald and Vick. When it starts to count this team's back-up should be Hamdan.

"Trent Edwards played poorly in Buffalo's exhibition opener, but we'll guess that this mostly has to do with noodle-armed backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. If Edwards goes down (likely, considering his history), the Bills' offense would almost certainly fall apart. La Canfora suggests Mike Vick as an option."

Very interesting... guess they dont have 2 much trust in FITZ, dont blame them...

Hmm. It's preseason. 2 drives inside the 20. Reed and Parrish might have made a grab tossed their way. But they didn't. Or maybe Jenkins from further out.

Let's see how Saturday's tilt against CHI goes. QBs and WRs have to work out timing - practice reps matter and which QB gets the most of them matters.

Barking and baying at the moon about any backup QB after the first PS game is nuts...

Another plus to Vick is his ability to avoid un-blocked DL and Blitzers....

Vick got sacked pretty often, actually.

I always though Vick was underrated as a quarterback because he didn't fit a stereotype. But right now he's just a huge question mark.

Fitzpatrick is a mediocre backup but he's not that bad. After all he won 4.5 of the last 8 games last year with a banged up Bengals offense.

The point is that he's not the guy deciding who gets signed. How do you know that his list didn't have Garcia as the No. 1 available QB?

My understanding is that he is indeed amongst the members of the inner circle. I would argue that he, more than Brandon and even more than Overdorf, is responsible for signing free agents. It's his list, his team of scouts, his evaluation, and then a recommendation of how much they are worth. Brandon I think puts his two cents in, and may veto, and Overdorf may eventually not be able to make a deal with the player because of how much they are willing to pay -- and surely it is a three or four or five headed monster including Ralph and Jauron, but IMO if you had to say one single guy is the most responsible for free agent signings it would be Guy over all the others.

Yep. He ought to work on swiveling his head and not letting his gaze telegraph the intent. I see very few Bills games - this HOF game was probably the first I ever spent more that 10 minutes watching. Does TE make a habit of staring at one downfield reciever? - I just don't know.

I would have liked to have seen him react to this odd happenstance of a sole lineman being steadily driven back with space on either side, on the pick play. That should set off a signal. Shoumann (#80) was out on the left with not a soul around. A quick flick away. Or take the sack.

I'm not quite ready to shove Fitz out the door just yet. I hope Buffalo left Matt Baker in Ohio though.

Here's a list of what is out there in regards to QBs according to NFL.com...the pickin's is slim here jimbobs:

Bollinger, Brooks (UFL)

Frerotte, Gus

Gray, Quinn (UFL)

Griese, Brian

Henson, Drew

Johnson, Brad

Losman, J.P. (UFL)

Martin, Jamie

Nall, Craig

Tuiasosopo, Marques

Vick, Michael

Wright, Anthony

Then of course there are always undrafted FA’s like:

Jason Boltus (CFL)

Nathan Brown

Chase Clement (Retired from CFL)

Cullen Harper

Graham Harrell (CFL)

Chase Holbrook

David Johnson

Brian Johnson (UFL)

Willie Tuitama

Drew Willy

I don't see anyone on this list that is going to come in and play better than Fitz save maybe Griese. However, if Buffalo was going to keep a 4th QB around to develop, get rid of Baker and pick someone else up, Willy, Harrell, or Holbrook would be my picks here. Anyone know of any other FA's that are left off this list that could still play?

After looking at your list, if Trent were indeed to go down, which isn't unlikely, the only guy on that list who would give the Bills a chance at a post season berth would be, ahem, Michael Vick. Possibly Brian Griese but I doubt it. I think if Trent went down for more than 4-5 games we have zero chance with Fitzpatrick.

If I were Ralph I would do it and sign Vick, although I surely understand the downside.

Brett Favre

I'm glad to see this thread turn into a 'so who's out there?' level -sort of.

This may be worthy of consideration, if Trent should get seriously injured late in the season and the Bills are vying for/likely going to make the playoffs. Otherwise, it's safe to assume other 'name' QB's will come available as camps wind down. I agree with the consensus, we have NO backup.

Trent played fine, BTW.

I would like to dispel this rumor. I do not believe that Dick Jauron is on any kind of hot seat. I would also add that I think Dick feels no more pressure to produce this season than he has any other season for the Bills. The corpse is coaching in the first season of a 3 year extension. I say anything better than 5-11 and dead Dick Jauron is manning the sidelines again in 2010. Do you really think that RW will eat $4mil + of DJ's contract and then go out and hire a real coach? :w00t: No way Jose. Much easier to blame the young O-line for the season's failure, bring in a veteran FA, sell the public on the latest draft class, and the beat goes on.
