Comcast Threatening To Shut Me Down!

Got a call today from a Comcast security agent. Tells me that I have a 250gig per month download limit and our number is at 650gigs!!!! If it doesn't stop they are gonna suspend our account for one year. Have my 15 year old son at home for the summer. Also, my nephew from Oregon is staying with us and working at our shop for the summer. Everyone has either their own desktop or laptop pc. Before the obligatory porn jokes I think the bulk of it is coming from those two guys. My son has been watching movies every day from Netflix via Xbox Live. The nephew downloads all kinds of tv shows. It's non stop with him. In fact, a month ago I upgraded my internet connection because I was lagging when playing TF2 online and I thought constant downloading was throttling the connection for gaming. Anyone one else get a call like this? Also another thing to consider is that my wireless connection is not secured. I've never had a problem before but i think Im going to have to figure out how to do that tonight. Just in case someone is stealing some of my bandwidth. If I go into my router will it tell me which how much data each pc is downloading?

Your wireless router won't tell you how much is being used (not that I've ever seen anyway). You'll be able to see how many machines are connected to it though -- so if you see some machines that you don't recognize...

 

Try asking Comcast for a tool that lets you identify where the bandwidth use is coming from as you don't believe it's true. I would assume that they should have to be able to prove what you're using and where it's coming from. I could be wrong though...

650 gigs a month? That's a huge amount of content, whether it be movies, tv shows, porn, whatever. I guess I really am getting old because what the hell are these kids up to with these goddamn compooters all day long? More importantly, exactly what is the difference between a compooter and a teenager in these crazy everloving times in which we're living? I cannot tell the difference except that one is cleaner/smells better than the other.

Wireless not secured? You might as well had a sign on your front lawn saying "Free Internet Access".

 

First things first: secure your wireless access.

 

Doing something with the router is the simplest and easiest way.

 

What is the make and model of your router? Some of the newer ones have a built in bandwidth monitor of some kind. Unfortunately, the ones that do are not very informative (usually). Check your routers manual to verify if and what may be available to you.

 

Even if you make and model does not have any kind of monitor (or its crappy), check out http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices.

See if your make and model are listed and can be updated. If so, you can re-flash the router firmware using dd-wrt software (This assumes you have the technical ability to do so). For most devices, the dd-wrt firmware flash will add a total bandwidth monitor, both incoming and outgoing. However, even with DD-wrt, you still will not be able to monitor per user consumption.

 

There are other options besides using something via the router. However, those options are pretty complex.

Not sure how Netflix/Xbox does their compression, but a DVD movie is 4-8GB in size. So if you're kid's watching a movie every day, thats 120-240GB per month right there. Figure another gig or two for each TV show your nephew downloads....

 

I'd recommend giving your kid a Blockbuster card and tell the nephew to watch re-runs on cable

Thing is I just upgraded my plan. I'm paying close to $80 for 6 up and 20 down i think. It's kinda bull$h1t that they want to limit my download volume.

Stupid thing is we have 3 HD tvs in the house. 1 32", 1 42", 1 55". This guy watches all his $h1t on a little 15" laptop screen.

Comcast has been doing this for at least a few years now. I remember reading the articles at my last job.

 

My understanding is most major ISPs have/had some kind of cap limits. Comcast came under the most fire because of their customer service regarding the limits.

 

The actual bandwidth limits were never published in their TOS (they just referenced "excessive use"), the limits were not imposed with any consistency (it depended on what node the customer was attached to), and they way Comcast notified the customer was through snail mail. Letters were received as late as the 20th day of the month (but the letter was effective the first day) making any attempt to correct the problem worthless (by the time the customer received the letter, they were already over the limit for that month, thus causing Comcast to suspend the customers account).

 

Even if the customer called tech support after receiving the letter and asked for the bandwidth limit amount, Comcast still would still refuse to reveal it, citing "excessive use" and referencing the TOS.

 

It was only in the past year Comcast published the limits, and they are being imposed with consistency.

I'm on board with folks that eat 2, 3, 10 times more than I do paying a bigger bill for their food.

 

What do you do for a living? Can I get ten times of whatever product, service or material goods for the same price as the fellow that pays for one, from you, or your business or your employer? No? Why not? :w00t:

Thanks for the help in your previous post Cynical. I've had Comcast for maybe a year but I just upgraded my speed about a month ago.

if they eat 2, 3, 10 times more than you....don't you think they pay 2, 3, 10 times more for that food they are eating? I was in consumer electronics and no, i do not think you should pay half of what i pay for the same tv simply because you watch it half as much as i paid for it.....hey, i'm just sayin' :worthy:
