Wellington Mara was a great man for not overexploiting the NYC market with his Giants, and allowing the smaller market teams a chance to compete. This was a great reason for the expansion of all fanbases and the popularity of the game. Snyder, Jones, Kraft are the ones really screwing up the NFL much the same way Steinbrenner has ruined baseball. Greedy owners turn off fans. Why is it that there are college stadiums with over 100,000 seats but no NFL stadium nearly as large? Football should be a game where the Pro's have 120,000 seat stadiums with avg. tickets under $45, instead of $75. Pro sports should not be about the rich !@#$s in the boxes, but the everyday diehard in in the 500 section in row 37. Keep in mind only a small handful of colleges actually make money on sports. They also escape the burden of player salaries. It is also interesting to note that pro teams are not generally highly profitable - though the owners tend to make out (in some sports) well on the appreciation of their franchise value. My guess is that Jerry Jones will ultimately make out quite well with his stadium. The average fan is priced out but with a perennial sold out stadium they get to sit at home and watch the game which only further helps the revenue machine churn through TV dollars. When your team hasn't won a playoff game in 13 years, you can't afford to be arrogant. I don't know where the Cowboys will finish this year (in a down time for the NFC East, they could win the division), but with the economy failing to improve, the Cowboys could have some empty seats in that new Taj Mahal they built. I'm happy to see the Pokes and Jerry Jones struggle. The sad thing is they were able to beat the Bills twice in the SB in the early '90s. At least they had a prime, and Jones can feel some arrogance about that which Wilson cannot. I think the bad economy will hurt the big market teams more than Buffalo, because Buffalo always has a pretty bad economy by national standards anyway. As the economy and our society continue to deteriorate (and they will) big time sports will be in for a major readjustment. Look where the NBA was 20 years ago and where it is today. I think only about 11% of Americans watch the NBA finals on TV in an average year. The NFL may follow suit. Do you think that Jerry Jones wants to hear whining from the greedy Bills owner who doesn't have the responsibility to pay off expensive stadium bonds that he has? Do you think Jerry Jones wants to hear how he pays up to the cap and the Bills weasel owner's team is much under the cap, and then pockets the difference? Do you think that Jerry Jones wants to hear the standard complaint about money from Buffalo's out of touch owner and then see him decline money for the naming rights of the stadium because he wants the staduim he didn't pay for named after him. What stupidity. Do you think Jerry Jones wants to hear how the complaining owner of the losing Bills makes a sweetheart deal with a Toronto group to have games played in Toronto, and then pockets all the upfront money without any inclination of investing some those extra ducats into a decade losing team? Ralph Wilson is publicly (tax dollars) and leaguewise one of the most subsidized owners in the league. That's why all of the other owners currently favor an extension of the CBA. Rant all you want about RW but to suggest he doesn't have the ear of his fellow owners, at least on this issue, is ignorant. I've been saying the same thing for some time--each time someone comes out with the false claim that Ralph "can't compete". He could easily "keep up with the Jonses" if he poured every cent of profit into the team payroll every year. He choses not to do so. Just pointing this out. I never made the claim that other owners aren't subsidized to a degree. However, there is no other owner who complains more about other teams generating more revenue than he does without acknowledging that he is being subsidized by those other more wealthy teams. The reality is that in his late shriviled up stage of ownership his advice is quickly dismissed by most of the owners. He is a has been who has lost touch with today's reality. The Bills have been inept for half a generation in a league designed for parity. Success in any organization starts at the top. Where is the accountability??? I thought by saying "Right" that came through along with the highlighted text from his post. I'm well aware of the owners' stance. Ralph also voted against the Giants/Jets and other teams being able to draw from established league funds to finance new stadiums.
