2009 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Grade: 72 | Key

Alert: None

Comment: Kelsay has been a mainstay on the Bills' defense since his second season in the league in 2004. Kelsay is somewhat undersized but is a high energy player with good athleticism and instincts. He has great initial quickness to gain leverage early in the play with speed to close and run down plays along the line of scrimmage. He finds the level of the ball well to read and react to get to the pile. He has active hands to control blockers and is able to separate effectively to maintain gap responsibility. Kelsay isn't a naturally powerful defender but can set the edge effectively with technique, athleticism and effort. He runs well showing excellent range for his position. Kelsay is a solid pass rusher but has never been a big producer in this area.

28th overall

 .......................There goes Scouts Inc's credibility.

We don't look like contenders all in all with the raters. Its all about how we play when the regular season starts. No one is going to give you credit and put your players in the pro bowl until you make the playoffs. It is time to make the playoffs and THEN we might get some recognition.

"is right on the cusp of being considered a "good starter".

That should really inspire us.

I actually agree with all of this except the "solid pass rusher" part. Anyone who thinks that hasn't been watching. Against the run, however, he is solid. Not dominant, but solid. If we could replace him in passing situations with a pass rushing specialist (like Maybin), then we might have a RDE combo worth something.

How about Reggie Corner, Drayton Florence & Ashton Youboty?

2009 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Grade: 60 | Key

Alert: None

Comment: Corner had a very solid rookie season with two starts to his credit as well as extensive playing time. Corner is an undersized cornerback with excellent athleticism. He lacks bulk and power, and that hinders his ability as a run support defender. Still, Corner is a willing tackler and tries to be aggressive turning plays toward the pursuit. He needs to use his hands better versus block protection to stay active to the pile. Corner has great foot agility, quickness and balance in short underneath coverage responsibilities. He might not have the outstanding pure burst out on an island to be effective versus top speed receivers.

Grade: 57 | Key

Comment: Florence is a five-year veteran who always has shown a lot of promise, but something is missing. He split time on the right perimeter last season and wasn't bad, but he's still a half-step away from being a quality NFL starter. He has a very good combination of size, speed and agility, but he seems to suffer from brain cramps and will hesitate too often at the wrong time. He lacks ideal hip fluidity, but he can turn and run pretty well with speed receivers and occasionally shows a bit of recovery burst when he loses a step. He isn't much of a playmaker when the ball is in the air, and he misses some interception opportunities because he lacks good ball skills. He consistently loses a step against receivers who can make a hard cut without telegraphing their route. He lacks great technique, getting too high in his pedal and often losing a step in transition.

Comment: Youbouty has been a career backup for Buffalo. He's valuable in sub packages. He has good size and athleticism but lacks enough pure speed to be effective out on an island. He has great short-area quickness, lateral agility and balance to be effective in short and intermediate zone and combination man schemes. He maintains leverage well with proper angles and cushion in both man and zone schemes. Youbouty can flip his hips to turn and stay in his opponent's hip pocket. He's a solid reactor as plays unfold and appears to have a natural feel for the game.

Whitner 9th overall among safeties?!? Okay, so he and Kelsey are in some respects solid, but do not make any plays...and that makes you highly rated?

Yah what do the reviews of John Beck & Cedric Benson look like?

Comment: Whitner had another solid season in 2008 but was banged up some and didn't have the production he marked up in his previous two years. Whitner is a compact built player with good power and athleticism. He is an excellent run support defender who is best attacking down hill to the line of scrimmage. Whitner is a solid reactor to both the run and pass. He maintains leverage with proper angles while playing under control. He is a physical safety who works through trash with good hand use to ward off blockers as well as showing great pop and power as an open field tackler.

9th overall among safeties

Yet, posters here continue to say Byrd is going to bump Whitner from the starting lineup rather than Scott.

ESPN lumps all tackles together. Sorry.

but among all tackles, he would be tied for 45th.

This is something I'm afraid of. Hope they're wrong, but I like Butler much better as a guard than a tackle. Again, I hope he does better than they think he will.

9th out of 32, that seems about right to me, very good but not elite. I don't like that they gave up a #9 pick for a guy who is ranked there. But in a more stable environment, maybe he can move up. Assuning he ever gets a stable environment on that defense.

I think these ratings are right on.

Kelsay, all of them.

Jeez, is there ANYBODY these scouts don't like? Every one of these assessments makes these guys appear superstars -though they then rate them low.. :wallbash:

I think they are focusing on their positive attributes as opposed to the negative ones. Everyone has positives, it's just to what degree are they positives.

These rankings are more telling in the comparative listings they give the players vs the actual grade. Who cares whether their "highly-rated" or not, just where they are in relation to other players int he league. It is possible that there aren't a lot of good safeties in the league for Whitner.

I'm no fan of Kelsay but I think it bears mentioning is that part of the problem is that injuries diminished the Bills ability to rotate defensive linemen- one of the tenants of our defense is to keep our undersized players fresh so the can go all out and not worry about becoming exhausted- I think with a better rotation Kelsay can get back up to the 4-6 sack range.

BTW; what is Scott rating?

Actually, ESPN lumps all safeties together, so Whitner is 9th out of 64.

Comment: Scott has been in a backup role since leaving the Atlanta Falcons but was solid for the Bills' secondary in 2008. He is a good combination of size and strength with above average athleticism. He is best in the box and close to the line of scrimmage. Scott is an aggressive run defender who is too inconsistent to make plays in space. He has good range to pursue both the run and pass, but Scott lacks great lateral agility and quickness to redirect in the open field.

Thanks Fingon, the battle for the nickelback role is IMO the most intriguing part of this year's camp.

Good stuff Fing, thanks.

Would like to read about Keith Ellison when you get a chance.

2009 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Grade: 56 | Key

Alert: None

Comment: Ellison is an undersized linebacker who had primarily been a backup and special teams contributor early in his career, but was thrust into a starting role last season. He has good speed and athleticism, but is best when covered up. He isn't a good take-on player and will get smothered at times, once engaged by offensive linemen. He over-runs plays at times and needs to break down to leverage ball-carriers in pursuit. Ellison has improved with his route recognition, but must continue to progress in this area to become a more effective coverage defender. His lack of bulk and strength makes him a liability at times versus the running game and is most valuable giving depth.
