The Poojer
particularly for audio, and specifically if you are doing flac or other lossless audio files? I have always used nero, but just wondering if there is something better out there. thanks in advance
Fezmid
Good question - I just looked into this a couple of weeks ago. I rebuilt my PC, and couldn't find my Nero license. I've been getting annoyed with Nero lately because their software is overly bloated, and they force upgrades by not supporting new burners. I bought version 5 years ago, but when I had to buy a new DVD-R drive because mine died, the burner wasn't supported unless I upgraded to Nero 6. Ridiculous. So after searching around, I found a great free tool from a company called Ashampoo. It's called Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 FREE. Seems to work well -- I've burned a couple of data disks, a couple of ISOs, and a couple of audio disks so far. Haven't tried FLAC, but it would probably work. They're a German company, just like Ahead (makers of Nero) -- why do German copmanies make the best burning software...? http://www.ashampoo.com http://download.cnet.com/Ashampoo-Burning-...4-10776287.html

Fezmid
Just got an email from Ashampoo -- and they're saying you can "name your own price" for their software. Not sure how low you can go, but if you want one of the newer versions of their software, it might be worth trying: http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/muao_2_0_USD.htm

stuckincincy
Nero ... I'm too sluglike to change Same here. It was a throw-in for some cheap video card years ago. I've bought a couple of cheap vid card since, and Nero is there along with the other stuff you can load. It does the job, and I'm used to it. I guess other programs do a better job regarding features and space savings. I don't care - the last time I bought a pack of CD-R platters, they were something like 50 cents apiece. BillsWatch
They're a German company, just like Ahead (makers of Nero) -- why do German copmanies make the best burning software...? German companies do well in this frankly (insert smilie here) because it fits well to them. While US is known for creativity and individuality, Japan for long term outlook and group mindset, the Germans are type who thrive on extremely detailed oriented improvements with lots of patents on these type of things. A German company was first for example to lease rights to OCR algorithm I invented for Hughes understanding immediately how to utilize the process changes I came up with. Read paper on patent 5970171 [Apparatus and method of fusing the outputs of multiple intelligent character recognition (ICR) systems to reduce error rate] if you need help sleeping. Doesn't help me since I helped write it unfortunately. They are also sticklers for spelling and creating new words which is great for some things but terrible for some new ideas.
