Just Jack Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Heck, the Irish can do it I know you can too! You sure about that? Remember history class, the Irish Potato Famine? Heck, the Irish can do it I know you can too! You sure about that? Remember history class, the Irish Potato Famine?
boyst Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 How hard is it to grow potatoes? Depends on the weather and how hard you work at it. I've planted 20lbs and harvested 25lbs. You have to weed and dust them regularly. Treat them right with fertilizer and soil. If too wet they rot. If too dry no plant. You can take any potato and cut it about 4 times and throw in the ground. In WNY the start date is prob mid march to early april.

Gugny Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I thought taters went into the ground late fall and you harvested next summer? Those are tulips.
boyst Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 What about sweet potatoes? Are very hard to get "right." They go in the ground in May-ish up there I would imagine. They take a lot of nutrients, need almost perfect environmental conditions, and if grown right yourself can be huge. The problem, if I recall, is that if you harvest them too late they lose taste. If too early they taste raw. I do not like them, though, so I have little to no experience. I have grown a lot of things, those are not one. I do great with tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, cucumber and lettuce. I wish I ate more vegetables, specifically squash. The things you can make with that are amazing. http://allrecipes.com/recipes/fruits-and-vegetables/vegetables/squash/ If you've never had spaghetti squash then you're missing out on something healthy that you can make to a skettie type meal. Winter squash is different, too. Pumpkin, too. You can do a ton with it. Ever heard of mince meat? It's a way of preserving meat using scraps, a good way to do that is with pecans and pumpkin with molasses. I know a lot about food. I thought taters went into the ground late fall and you harvested next summer? Gug is not right. But, you are thinking of tulips and other bulbs. You plant those in the fall and they come up in the Spring. You're in O-H I-O so you are a bit different there... but you do most of your planting in the fall and Spring.

boyst Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 been a while that i have planted anything. plan on a few things this year. I can give you some great tips, I will post some here, if you want more PM your email... Look in to raised beds. They are SOOOO much easier to deal with. Strawberries are fun - had to just get that out of the way. A simple googling of raised beds can show you some great ideas. You can make them complex, with self watering devices and even built in auto-aerating tubes. I seem to recall you liked fish? Or maybe just mentioned it - but taking any fish left overs and putting them where you plan on putting a tomato plant can pay off big time. The non-cooked fish are what I mean, if you fish and clean them yourself, that is... Have your soil tested. http://ccesuffolk.org/soil-testing-laboratory/ It's free here, pretty sure it is there, too. You pay for shipping but it is worth it! I want to do an assortment of peppers next year. This is the zone map for NY. Use this for planting anything. http://parkseedjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Parks-Veg.-Plant-Guide3.jpg http://veggieharvest.com/calendars/zone-5.html http://www.thevegetablegarden.info/resources/planting-schedules/zones-5-6-planting-schedule The last two look really good.
