blzrul Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I disagree with a proposed ban on smoking in the military...those people have enough to deal with and if smoking gives them some solace and comfort they should do it. Obviously it's not good for their health but...it should be up to each individual as to when and if they quit.

And as I said, they will have to take up smoking when they are done, because this country's VA won't take care of them unless they provide the VA with the information they already have.

The VA is worthless and should be done away with. Veterans should recieve normal healthcare for their services. The money spent on keepintg the VA program running is a complete waste. A smoking ban for the military is a disturbintg trend of government parenting. Everyone knows the consequences of smoking. We should be allowed to make our own choices. In the civilian world you can leave work and go smoke at home if you desire. Many military jobs aren't 9 to 5. What about other tobacco products? How do you tell a guy to run into a building full of combatants who want to kill you and then afterwards say, no smoking? Some of these warriors are on their 4th and 5th deployments in combat. Meanwhile, back home people debate on whether or not to take their smoking away to save a few dollars? Could we have our priorities more jacked up? Sickening.

If everyone quit smoking, healthcare costs would rise significantly as folks who would have ordinarily died at a younger age, rather quickly from lung cancer, live much longer and consume more health care services.

Is it the smoking that kills them or their tendency to knowingly engage in risky behaviors? Seems to me that if you eliminate smoking from the equation, a good portion of smokers-till-death would find other ways of slowing (or quickly) killing themselves.

Interesting theory, I'd love to see some numbers that back it up. I read that the average person consumes 80-90% of the health care services they use in the last year of their life. I'm not sure if its true, but it does raise an interesting point.

LOL, I guess we are all wrong on some issues. But to answer your question, bans lead to other bans. People seem to be very intolerant these days, except for a limited few issues. It is almost like we are given an unspoken list of what is and isn't OK, and people fall in line like sheep. In Manhattan, people continue to freak out over bells on ice cream trucks. Have you ever been to Manhattan and heard the noise? Sirens, street musicians, shouting, etc. But ice cream trucks set them off. Many politicians are corrupt, but often they are also smart. As long as a person like John McCain can get people all worked up over steroids in baseball, he can author an amnesty bill for illegal aliens and go unscathed. Schmuckabee proposed free college tuition for illegal aliens, yet people think that he is "conservative." These guys are not better than Obama, and the bans, as well as other lunacy will continue.

I couldn't care less if it evens out- improving the overall health in the country is worth it- even if it costs more.

I have the best healthcare plan money can buy (And it costs a lot of money)...and yet it still takes me weeks to get appointments with any specialist because doctors are so busy. My family doctor recently circulated a poll asking if patients would be willing to pay $3000/ year for unlimited visits if he no longer took healthcare plans. That becomes more appealing if this Bill passes.

That becomes more appealing if this Bill passes. Of course, that annual payment doesn't cover hospital stays, etc., but I honestly like your doctor's thinking. And forget my doctor; it'd be worth it just for my wife's ObGyn. Though admittedly, while we may need to wait a few weeks to see a dermatologist or some other specialist, we sail right through with something even remotely life-threatening. I have a friend who came here from Canada (and actually just became an America a couple of weeks ago. His brother, still in Canada, is in need of a heart bypass, and has been in the Canadian healtchare queue for the past year and is still waiting. My friend, on the other hand, was diagnosed with prostate cancer five weeks ago, and goes in for surgery tomorrow.
