July Movies: Harry Potter 6, Public Enemies, Bruno, and Ice Age 3....

With Transformers putting up gargantuan numbers in the box office, other studios are looking to cash in big time with the month of July rolling in. After lots of action in May and lots of laughs in June, July has a little bit of everything for the summer crowds. From fantasy to animation, from thriller to drama, and from action to romantic comedy, audiences will have plenty to choose from.

After being forced to wait another 8 months, fantasy fans will rejoice as Warner Bros. finally releases "Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince". In the 6th tale of the boy wizard, Harry Potter discovers even more about the evil Lord Voldemort's past, thanks to his mentor Dumbledore and mysterious textbook marked "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince." By the end of the year, nothing will ever be the same. Anticipation is high as the series is coming close to it's finish. David Yates is back in the director's chair, as the stories become even darker. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, Ralph Fiennes, David Thewlis, Robbie Coltrane, & Timothy Spall.

Captain Jack Sparrow takes on Batman as Johnny Depp and Christian Bale star in Universal's "Public Enemies". Throughout movie history, the story of gangsters has always been popular. FBI agent Melvin Purvis sets his sights on American gangster John Dillinger and others in an attempt to curb a rampant Chicago crime spree during the 1930s. This is not your typical summer fare, so the starpower of Depp & Bale will truly be tested. Add in director Michael Mann and Oscar winning actress Marion Cotillard, and the early whispers of Oscar could be justified. Also starring, Channing Tatum, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Lang, Stephen Dorff, & Emilie De Ravin.

Three years ago, Sacha Baron Cohen shocked audiences with his comedy movie Borat. This year Cohen returns with more politically incorrect humor in "Bruno". Flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter Bruno travels the world in search of the latest style trends. While Bruno may not be as popular a character as Borat, many fans of Cohen are buzzing with anticipation after seeing the first previews. It would not be shocking if Borat like numbers at box office appear again.

Manny, Sid, Diego & Scrat are back for a 3rd time in "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs". If it's the Ice Age, why are dinosaurs showing up now? Oh who cares. This time out, When Sid gets into some trouble, it's up to Manny, Ellie, Diego, and Scrat to save their friend. Their mission leads them to an underground world where encounter dinosaurs, flora, and fauna -- as well as a one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.

Adam Sandler & Seth Rogen in a Judd Apatow movie?! Sounds like the perfect makings of a huge raunchy comedy. Not so fast. "Funny People" is about seasoned comedian George Simmons, who learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship inspires him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act. Also starring Leslie Mann.

In "G-Force", A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world. You read that correctly. Starring, Zach Galifianakis, Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, Bill Nighy, Steve Buscemi, Penelope Cruz & Jon Favreau.

A quadrant of romantic comedies is spread throughout this month.

In the oft-delayed "The Ugly Truth", A macho morning TV show correspondent makes a bet with his love-challenged producer: If his tips on how to land and keep a guy don't work, he'll quit the business. But while he coaches her through a fledgling romance, can he avoid falling for her, and vice versa? Starring Gerard Butler & Katherine Heigl.

In "I Love You, Beth Cooper", The last night of high school takes an unexpected turn after geeky grad Denis Cooverman declares his love for hottie cheerleader Beth Cooper in his valedictorian speech. Starring Hayden Panettiere & Paul Rust.

In "The Answer Man", A reclusive author of a well-known spiritual guidance book falls for a sensible chiropractor and learns some important life lessons as he begins to face the public and his past. Starring Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham & Lou Taylor Pucci.

Finally, in "Adam", Soon after Beth moves into her new apartment, the beautiful, emotionally fragile writer is drawn to her downstairs neighbor, Adam, a handsome young guy who has Asperger's Syndrome. Starring Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne & Peter Gallagher.

If you need a horror movie there's "Orphan". A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be. Starring Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard & Isabelle Fuhrman.

In "Aliens in the Attic", a group of teenagers must protect their vacation home from the aliens who have taken over the top floor of the dwelling. Starring Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman & Carter Jenkins.

In "The Cove", Using state-of-the-art equipment, a group of activists, led by renown dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health.

Finally, in "Janky Promoters", Two shady concert promoters get into serious trouble when their plan to book a superstar rapper goes awry. Starring Mike Epps & Ice Cube.

Last July was so much better.

Anyway, this month doesn't look very appealing. Public Enemies is the only one I might go to a theater for. How have they put out 6 Harry Potter movies already. Those kids must be 40 by now. I can't remember any other series mass producing sequels except the ridiculous Saw series.

Yeah last July was very special.

I think Warner Bros. has done a good job with the Harry Potter series. 6 movies in 9 years? Add in the fact that they are making the last book in the series into two movies, that is crazy.

Just wait for the mass production of the Twilight sequels.

You are right on about the Saw series. When will people stop going to see those films?

Saw "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs", this was the best of the 3 movies by far. Definitely the funniest movie and some great adventure and the dinosaurs are fantastic. 20th Centruy Fox should let this series end, I can't think of any other ideas they can come up with. Adding dinosaurs into the mix was a great move.

Seeing Public Enemies tonight. Can't wait.

I've seen the mixed reviews too. Sometimes Michael Mann is hit or miss. I love "Heat", "The Insider", and "Collateral".

Saw "Public Enemies" and thought it was a good movie, however it could have been a great movie.

The story and events that took place are greatly depicted, Johnny Depp, Christian Bale & Marion Cotillard are all outstanding in their respective roles, and the action sequences are intense.

Despite all of that, there just seems to be something missing from this movie. Public Enemies does take a little while to get going, as I felt the 2nd half of the film was great. Also, while the lead actors characters are great to watch, it's the supporting characters who get lost in the shuffle. I would have liked to have seen more character development or interaction with Baby Face Nelson, J.Edgar Hoover, Harry Pierpont, & Charles Winstead. Hell, Pretty Boy Floyd is in the movie for what, 30 seconds?

I am a fan of several of Michael Mann's movies, and I've been waiting for this one since it was announced in being made last year. In the end I did enjoy this movie, yet I think those whispers of Best Picture will die away.

(Sorry for the bump guys)

I saw PE yesterday and thought it was a fantastic movie. The movie of the summer, for me, so far. Well directed, acted, written and shot. Re-affirms my faith in Depp after this caricature roles in Pirates of the Caribbean & Willie Wonka. Bale and Cotillard are also excellent.

I was completely disappointed in the movie. I'm a Depp, Bale, and Mann fan too. I thought it was too unwieldy, the dialogue and direction was really cheesy in points, certain characters weren't developed, certain facts weren't properly explained, etc. I was expecting it to be a lot tighter in execution and focus, but it wasn't.

I saw "The Hurt Locker" this past weekend. I posted this film in my recent June movies topic. Very intense film. For those not familiar with it, it's about an EOD unit in The Iraq War. Nobody big is in this movie, although there are cameos by Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce, David Morse & Evangeline Lily.

See this movie if you get a chance. It may not be in your area yet, as it is in limited release.

I saw Public Enemies and Bruno this week. I thought that Public Enemies was a GREAT movie. I really don't understand how anyone would walk away criticizing the film.

Bruno was ABSOLUTELY HILLARIOUS. I have never LAUGHED OUT LOUD so much at a movie!

I have not seen Bruno, but a few people told me they were surprised that it did not get an NC-17 rating. Do you think it should have gotten that rating or do you think the R rating is justified?

As for Public Enemies, I thought it was very good. I just wish there had been more of a showcase on the minor characters. They just seem to be there, so you don't get to know them that well. I thought Depp, Bale & Cotillard were fantastic. I just think Public Enemies comes up just a tad short of being a "GREAT" movie.

I definitely thought that the film deserved at least an NC-17 rating. That was something that we spoke about when we left the theater. I really liked the movie and laughed my azz off throughout, but considering all of the explicit sexual scenes and humor, yes NC-17 at a minimum was justified. That being said, anyone with a sense of humor MUST SEE this movie.
