BF_in_Indiana Posted August 26, 2004 Share Posted August 26, 2004 I saw Metallica last night and let me tell you, it's awesome being in the front row and having James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett pointing at you and doing their thing right in front of you. They came through NC once this year with Godsmack, the show in Charlotte sold out before I could even think about getting tickets though. I was hoping to hear Breadfan since I know they have been playing a lot of rarer material on this tour. It was cool as hell having James in front of me singing For Whom the Bell Tolls, which is my favorite Metallica song of all time. Godsmack was great, but Metallica stole the show as expected. I've promised this story to a few people... so I figure I'll just dump it out now: About six years ago, I used to help run a Metallica fan site. It was a big site, probably the largest Metallica fan site around. Ran into the same kind of problems TBD runs into with server utilization and all of that. I had been planning a trip to Melbourne, Australia. About six months before I was scheduled to leave, Metallica scheduled two shows their, at the Melborne Tennis Center (may have been the Cricket ground, I don't remember). I bought tickets to both. I then started an online blitz campaign... "Play Killing Time in Melbourne!" Killing Time is a cover they do some times that they had never played live. Soon after, a lot of other Metallica sites started adding "PKTIM" to their pages. I flew out there and was out of contact with that site for a long time. First show came and went, no incident. The second show, about halfway through, one of 'em started cranking out the Killing Time guitar riff... took me a second to realize what it was. Then drums.. then bass.. then they started rocking on full-on Killing Time. They stopped about half way into it.. didn't finish the song. Coincidence, right? Wrong. As we were walking out to our car after the show, a black minivan pulled up. A big guy jumped out and slammed a bunch of us against a fence. It was later than usual because we had scored "After Show Meet and Greet" passes due to my work on the web site. It turns out that big guy was Tony Smith, their tour manager at the time. Kirk got out of the van. The five or six of us at the fence got autographs and whatnot. When he got to me, he asked some question.. I replied. He caught the American accent and looked at me a bit funny.. he asked what my name was in order to sign the shirt I had with me. When I said, "Jeff", he replied with, "The web site Jeff?!" I say.. yup. "We played what we could remember of Killing Time for you.. sorry we couldn't remember any more!" We just happened to be walking out when they were leaving.. and he just happened to feel like stopping to say hi to fans.. and I just happened to be one of those fans. I was there on a business trip and actually took a client to the show (he had a great time). It was very odd being one of the few non Japanese people there. Being an english speaker (and huge Metallica fan) I was able to sing along with all the songs but the crowd wasn't. When they played "The Memory Remains" the crowd broke into a thunderous set of "Da-Da-Das" when the Marianne Faithfull part kicked in - the only words the Japanese could sing! What was really funny was the aftershow experience. Everyone neatly filed out of the arena (actually an olympic swimming arena - they covered the pool for the floor) and got on their trains. 30 minutes after the show nobody was there! A far cry from the drinking/smoking/fighting/firestarting that happens after Metallica shows here in the U.S. I've seen Metallica more than 20 times and in 3 countries - can't wait to see them in a fourth. I saw them five years later then I should have. After Limp Bizkit I went back to my tent to lay down before RATM and my friend said he would wake me up so I could go back over there. BTW, I first saw them in Jan. 1992 (after they released the black album). I wanted to go see them when they toured for Justice but I was only 17 and I didn't know of anybody who could drive us to Texas back then for this concert.
