THE FINAL QUESTION IS MULTIPLE CHOICE.

Here are some things taken from the "Anatomy of a Crime" documentary series. This one on prostitution. It was produced in 2000. (Some things may have changed)

* Prostitution alone is approx. a $15 billion a year industry.

* Every year approx. 100,000 people are arrested in connection with prostitution.

* Taking Viagra will get a man harder than Chinese Arithmetic. (Sorry I thought it was funny when someone said it.) :lol:

* In Nevada legal prostitutes are required to get a working card. They are only given the card after weekly health assessments, which are mandatory, and prostitutes that have them have the lowest rate of HIV than any other segment of society. The tests look for HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.

* According to Dr. John Cassani there hasn't been a single case of HIV since 1987 in legal working prostitutes in Nevada.

* Those on the show who are against prostitution seemed to have a lot of their facts wrong.

Some other things from that documentary;

* In Stockton California the cable companies run a vice TV channel that runs pictures and names of arrested hookers and arrested johns. More here (Article from 1999). I've tried to find anything on legal challenges to this but can't find any. If it is legal to run these pictures it's like scarlet lettering people. JMO Also, for the hookers, to me, it seems like free advertising. If you see one of these girls on the street you can be sure she's not a cop.

* In San Fransisco arrested johns go to a "John School" where ex-prostitutes talk about the humiliation and sad lives that took them into prostitution. They also cover other things like a prostitute that tells them that they are big and great is lying. (no duh) One woman claimed that most of her boyfriends were killers and they all had keys to the motel room.

* One person said that in the end we all end up paying for sex. Whether it's dinner and movie or jewelry or etc. etc.

More stuff about prostitution here;

"The Perks of High-End Prostitution". An ABC money business article.

:oFleiss' now-defunct service charged a flat rate of $1,500 per hour for each woman. Prostitution is legal in some parts of Nevada, and Susan Austin, the madam of two Nevada brothels -- including the "world famous" Mustang Ranch -- said that some women there charge between $10,000 and $15,000 for a night or two days.

________________________________________________________________

Stockton tried a law that allowed law enforcement to seize the cars of convicted johns.

Link

Stockton officials adopted a tough and sensible vehicle-seizure ordinance in 2001.

Too tough, said justices of the California Supreme Court, who ruled against the law on July 26, saying only state - not local - lawmakers possess that authority.

from another part of the article;

Stockton's ordinance was simple and effective. Police officers would seize vehicles used in the commission of crimes such as drug dealing or solicitation of prostitution.

Those vehicles would be confiscated and sold. It's harsh, but it worked. From 2003 to 2006, the need for such seizures dropped by 50 percent. Word got out on the street quickly.

Government is waaay overstepping their bounds there, IMO.

Anyhoo, food for thought. May the discussion begin. That is if anyone has read this far.

One more thing. If the $15 billion dollars were taxed at 25% it would be an additional $1.125 billion for the government. (I think my math is correct.)

Yes, 15/4 = 1.125. Score another victory for public schools!

Really love when people's #1 justification for things like this is "so we can give the criminals in DC even more of our money to insulate their power".

I'm very naively hoping the new revenues will keep our taxes from going up for awhile. Hey, it could happen.

Prostitution is not a victimless crime, as some say.

The majority are eventually abused and beaten. Disease goes without saying. Some say about nations that "test" prostitutes. Right...

I don't know if an old term,"stockade", is still used. What that meant, was the confinement of a prostitute in an unescapable room. They were then humiliated, beaten, and gang raped - the goal being to break any sense of personal worth, spirit. To turn them into cattle, living in fear that if they dare balk in making money for the pimp, there would be an even more brutal treatment. And there was.

Our government even has a publication for prostitutes - wear cotton underwear, don't wear high-heel shoes because you will likely have to flee for your life and so on.

Many prostitutes are sad, sad souls, often with severe mental issues, reduced to being warm wet spots in the night waiting to see if tonight is their last. Some - many - are just young kids. Others are canny opportunists, biding time before it closes in.

Drug dependency is chronic. And encouraged.

My biggest concerns whether prostitution should be legal is how much government intervention there is

If a skeezy skank ho has trouble finding work, does the government subsidize them?

How are taxes collected? Are they collected like payroll taxes (hooker) or sales tax (john)

Will pimps be required to provide health care insurance to their b*tches in accordance with the upcoming health care reforms?

I could sure go for a Starbucks right about now

Jackass. How much of that do you think is because these operations are illegal?

Were it legal, will you approve, encourage members of your family making a career of it?

No, but that would be a case of me lending my opinion and/or advice to people I care about. I understand that it is not my place to forcibly impose my morals and belief system on others. I'm a big boy now and I don't need Motherment. Isn't that what you wackos always whine about - too much restriction by government? That charade of a sentiment obviously ends when some citizen starts doing something your church wouldn't approve of.

That is precisely why I favor legalizing it. When there are legal brothels women who want to work them can. Will there still be the street hooker? Yes, but the number should drop significantly and it should be easier to help these women out. The tax money could even go to programs that help them. JMO

Thereby using prostitution to support whoring...

:thumbsup:

IIRC, for awhile there the government owned the Bunny Ranch, therefore screwing us on another level.

This thread reminds me of what the wise Peter from Family guy once said:

but I'll tell you what's not cool--killing strippers. Strippers are people too; naked people who may be willing to pleasure you for a price you negotiate later behind the curtain of a VIP room. Besides, there's no reason to kill them, 'cause most of them are already dead inside...Good night, folks!

It's interesting, there are people here against it yet none of them show up on the poll. Everybody who's voted at this time is registering for it. :lol:

Gee - a full, multi-faceted page poll. Can't understand why people passed up the opportunity to dance attendance... :thumbsup:

How about if those other people - the legal prostitutes, not members of your family,soliciting sex for sale, stand around your street?

Do you give approval of that?

Members of your family don't need your brand of Motherment. Why would you advise them either way?

Legalize it, regulate it, zone it, control it. Or as you prefer, keep it underground, nasty, abusive and wherever it happens to end up. Good call.

I fail to see how my advice to members of my family is any business of yours or anybody else. Do you understand what Motherment means?

I certainly do.

As well as I understand that you desire that there be a ready supply of other people, not quite as worthwhile or human as you and yours, of course, that should be available on demand to copulate for payment of a fee.

You know, you could easily buy one of the straw men (women) you like to posit...
