JÂy RÛßeÒ Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Glad to know that he still has "it." I wonder if Jethro Tull still has "it"
Alaska Darin Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I wonder if Jethro Tull still has "it" If you mean Metallica's award, then I'm sure they do.

TPS Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I wish Dias was still around. He may be one of the great underrated guitarists of our time. I always thought it was Skunk, or one of the hired guitar aces playing the outrageous solos of the early albums...and often it was. But, I have discovered Dias played some of my favorite Dan licks. Denny is a computer programmer, for the most part, although he does the very occasional jazz gig, I think. Skunk is a military consultant, who regularly works for the Department of Defense. Ahhh...reminds me of the old days... Maybe it was the pot, but I thought the concerts I saw before they went studio-only were the bomb. Dias and the Skunk on Bodhisattva was always my favorite.
The Dean Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 I understand this is for a limited audience. The rest of you can simply ignore all this, or better yet, get with the program. As you may now, Steely Dan is playing complete albums, The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho, on special set nights in Boston, NYC, Chicago and LA. This all started this week in Boston. For some reason, The Royal Scam was not scheduled for Boston, but Aja was scheduled for this past Wednesday. This was discussed here: http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/20...m+--+Music+news The boys decided to play Aja AND The Royal Scam (plus 5 encore tunes). I guess it was pretty good : http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/20...ely_steely_dan/ http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/...ticleid=1186643 A short piece, but from someone who really understands, is here: http://www.hereandnow.org/2009/07/rundown-724/#4 Forward to minute 34. I had to use Google Chrome to get this to play, but I keep Firefox and IE pretty well locked down, security wise. It should also be noted that Larry Carlton is joining them for The Royal Scam and Internet Request Night in NYC, LA and Chicago: http://steelydan.com/tour09sspop.html
bdelma Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Who is playing with the band. Steve Gadd, Victor Feldman?
bdelma Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 How about this group. Michael Omartian - piano, keyboards David Paich - piano, keyboards Wilton Felder - bass Chuck Rainey - bass Denny Dias - guitar Larry Carlton - guitar Rick Derringer - guitar Hugh McCracken - guitar Dean Parks - guitar Elliott Randall - guitar Jimmie Haskell - horn Bill Perkins - horn Phil Woods - saxophone, vocals Hal Blaine - drums Jeff Porcaro - drums, dorophone
The Dean Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 Who is playing with the band. Steve Gadd, Victor Feldman? Well, since Feldman died in 1987, that would be some trick. Seriously, I wish he was with the band, he added something special and they really have never even tried to replace him in their sound (at least to my knowledge they haven't). Rochester's own Steve Gadd still does a lot of studio work and plays with several groups, most recently I think he is with Clapton on the 2009 tour. The Dan's current drummer is Keith Carlock. He has been with them for several years (played on Two Against Nature), was the only drummer on Everything Must Go (I think), Fagen's Morph the Cat and Becker's Circus Money. Extremely versatile drummer. Carlock did well in this year's Modern Drummer poll: Best All-Around, Best Pop Drummer and Best Fusion Drummer. Keith was also a runner-up in the Studio voting and finished in the money with a #3 Best Recorded Performance for Walter Becker's "Circus Money. http://www.keithcarlock.com/news.htm Here's the current band: http://steelydan.com/2kband.html Tawatha Agee [backing Vocals: '08, '09] Jim Beard [Keyboards: 08, 09] Keith Carlock [Drums: 03-'09] Jon Herington [Guitar: '00-'09] Carolyn Leonhart-Escoffery [b. Vocals: '00-'09 Rent Party ] Michael Leonhart [Trumpet, Keys: '00-'09 Rent Party Janice Pendarvis [b. Vocals: '09 Left Bank Holiday] Jim Pugh [Trombone: '00-'09] Roger Rosenberg [baritone Saxophone: '06-'09] Catherine Russell [b. Vocals: '08, '09] Marvin Stamm [Trumpet: '09 Left Bank Holiday] Freddie Washington [bass: '06-'09] Walt Weiskopf [saxophone: '03-'09] BTW, last night in Boston (Chang Theater) Steely Dan played the fabulous Doctor Wu live for the first time ever. Damn! They also ended every show in Boston with "Dirty Water", an old Standells' tune and currently the "theme song" of the Red Sox.

Of course the corpses of Felder, Perkins and Porcaro (any more?) would add a foul odor to the mix. The 2009 band is probably the best live band they have ever had. At least the best since the revival in the 1990s.
