TPS Posted July 9, 2009 Share Posted July 9, 2009 I wish Dias was still around. He may be one of the great underrated guitarists of our time. I always thought it was Skunk, or one of the hired guitar aces playing the outrageous solos of the early albums...and often it was. But, I have discovered Dias played some of my favorite Dan licks. Denny is a computer programmer, for the most part, although he does the very occasional jazz gig, I think. Skunk is a military consultant, who regularly works for the Department of Defense. Ahhh...reminds me of the old days... Maybe it was the pot, but I thought the concerts I saw before they went studio-only were the bomb. Dias and the Skunk on Bodhisattva was always my favorite. As you may now, Steely Dan is playing complete albums, The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho, on special set nights in Boston, NYC, Chicago and LA. This all started this week in Boston. For some reason, The Royal Scam was not scheduled for Boston, but Aja was scheduled for this past Wednesday. Seriously, I wish he was with the band, he added something special and they really have never even tried to replace him in their sound (at least to my knowledge they haven't). Rochester's own Steve Gadd still does a lot of studio work and plays with several groups, most recently I think he is with Clapton on the 2009 tour. The Dan's current drummer is Keith Carlock. He has been with them for several years (played on Two Against Nature), was the only drummer on Everything Must Go (I think), Fagen's Morph the Cat and Becker's Circus Money. Extremely versatile drummer. Carlock did well in this year's Modern Drummer poll: Best All-Around, Best Pop Drummer and Best Fusion Drummer. Of course the corpses of Felder, Perkins and Porcaro (any more?) would add a foul odor to the mix. The 2009 band is probably the best live band they have ever had.
