How about Nuclear Power for jobs in WNY?

Recommended Posts

This article reminded me of this idea: Ohio Power Plant

The reference to the plant having access to the power grid reminded me of Niagara Falls.

Before the "safety people" get up in arms: today's nuclear power plants are multitudes safer than yesterday's 3-Mile Island Plant. This new Westinghouse reactor is AWESOME, it's American, it's safe, it produces something for export, and something people really want and are willing to pay dearly for.

For the environmentalist: nothing is cleaner than modern nuke plants. The fossil fuel plants replaced would help global warming (not that I believe that bunk).

I know licensing issues take years; but maybe it can be fast-tracked by political maneuver.

Here's an off the wall idea for someone else: The Indian Reservations should forget cigarettes and casinos, they only prey on the working stiff. Imagine if the Senecas built a power plant and exported electricity. Heh. Well, may not happen, but it would be an interesting case to watch the license application go through NRC and court system. If Senecas even decided they needed a license.

Anway.. I just like the idea of WNY making something tangible and sending it to the rest of the world, causing cash to flow into the region for a change. To hell with the service economy. $10 hour phone center jobs won't do it. Forget tourism.. what a pipe dream: geography is not on Blfo's side. Forget manufacturers, they won't come for the laundry list of reason beat to death here.

Nukes!

First I thought this thread was a joke then I looked at who responded to this idiocy. Yeah...I'm sure my tribe would actually want nukes...we could use em to get back our aboriginal land lol! What is funnier is Finky's response: hey bud..it's a hypothetical and a rather ludicrous one at that.

The reservations bit was a merely humorous aside by the poster. His basic point still stands: why not generate nuclear power in WNY?

How does one generate "Nuclear Power," and what does one do with said "Nuclear Power" once it has been generated?

Yeah why not....we already have a healthy glow from all those Manhatten projects and chemical plants and what have you from days of yore. One thing for sure, there's enough Homer Simpson's around here to run the damn thing.

Please provide examples of healthy glow from any US nuclear project.

I think that's a brilliant idea, WNY would become a powerhouse (literally) between that and the Falls and would bring jobs to the area.

Hell even Westchester down here in NYC has a nuclear power plant and has never had any serious issues, other than the liberals wanting to shut it down. That's right in the backyard of some very wealthy folks.

A nuclear power plant in WNY, producing electricity for domestic and foreign use, makes a hell of a lot more sense than high speed rail service and fast ferrys. Just the pool of potential consumers of the product tells us that!

Legislators are unwilling to promote anything even remotely controversial, no matter what the upside. That's what happens when the number one objective is to remain in office/in power/in control.

How about this?

Free electric service in perpetuity for every homeowner in a 5 mile radius around the plant. People would get in line...

You would think a man who lived next to Mount Vesuvius (since the ground was so fertile) in 79 and 1631 would be more cautious.
