ofiba Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 On the play where fast freddy caught the punt.... It seemed to me that it was a designed play. It looked like they wanted Clements to call fair catch, and then fast freddy to catch it and run with it. Maybe they thought the other team would think it was a fair catch because clements called it, allowing smith to run off since he didn't call it. They were chatting before the play so i thought something might be up. What do you guys think happened on this play?
ofiba Posted November 7, 2004 Author Posted November 7, 2004 Another reason I thought that was what happened is I say nate and freddie explaining to the officials that he didn't call a fair catch.
Kelly the Dog Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 The ball was punted against the wind and was held up, and the two guys were just close. It was easier for Smith because he was closer to it orginally as he played 10 yards ahead of Clements. I don't think it was anything other than the short guy on the PR team caught a short punt.
eSJayDee Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 I believe if one player calls for a FC, the other player has to oblige that call as well. I could be wrong about that however. Bear in mind, doing so is kind of 'unfair '. Looks like what happened to me is that NC called for the FC, but couldn't get to the ball, F/J Smith caught the ball & was about to run, but stopped & fell realizing that the FC had been called (prohibiting from running after the catch).
Formerly Allan in MD Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 If the rule book says that when someone calls a fair catch, it's okay for someone else to catch the ball and run with it, something is definitely wrong with the rule book. Has anyone ever seen someone else catch a fair catch-called punt, run with it or not, before today?

I also think it is a penalty if you run with it.
