Magox
Interesting. Looks like NY is in for a long court battle. Linky The coup was watched from a back room by Rochester billionaire B. Thomas Golisano, the owner of the Buffalo Sabres, who had helped -- with $4 million of his own money -- the Democrats take control in last fall's elections. But Golisano recently said he has been stung by the Democrats, who he blamed for crafting a state budget that hiked taxes and hit upstate especially hard. Golisano recently moved his legal residence to Florida to save millions in income taxes. "We were quite unhappy with the way the Democrats responded to some of the commitments they made to reform, both budgetary and process," Golisano said in an interview in Espada's Capitol office an hour after the Senate floor coup. That's $4 Million he will never see again. Oh, the irony...

You've sure have some real smart people back there. You see a Democrat giving $4M to the Democrats to give them majority rule, and then stand around yapping in his best Captain Renault: "I'm shocked, SHOCKED to find Democrats raising taxes on the rich!" Your winnings, sir.
OCinBuffalo
I liked the part where Smith believes that the public will be outraged by all this. Hy-f'ing-sterical. The beatings we routinely take every payday have pretty much sapped whatever outrage we might have mustered there buddy. Perhaps you can force a bunch of union employees to form a "protest"? And why not? Don't they "owe"? Wake up and smell it already: They and their union bosses are the reason you are in this mess to begin with there Smith. It's all bad. It always will be. Time to break free of this eternal corruption. Until then, don't look for anyone other than state employees to be "outraged". It looks like reason and accountability have invaded Albany. Bad day for the far left and the union bosses.

Bad day for the far left and the union bosses. Problem is the Republicans are just as corrupted by the unions as the Democrats in NYS. The teachers union, health care lobby and the public employees union really run the show, the parties are irrelevant. Until there are real term limits and publicly funded campaigns, expect nothing to change.

Your winnings, sir. But in this case ...Democrat/Republican doesn't adequately describe the dynamic. The downstate Democrat cartel has had a power-lock that is as much regional as party. Golisano's strategy of supporting Upstate Democrats has been to divide the State Democratic Party internally. Something that many Democrats west of Albany want to happen. Lt. Dan's Revenge
Could not be happier about these developments. Regardless of how you feel about Republicans and Democrats, this is a victory if you reside in Western New York. More meaningful voices in our area, and less downstate. Now the new Majority needs to realize that it can't rest on politics as usual, but work twice as hard at helping get this state out of this financial mess. Malcolm Smith, David Paterson and Co.'s budget and fiscal movements sure as hell weren't helping.

The teachers union, health care lobby and the public employees union really run the show, the parties are irrelevant. Until there are real term limits and publicly funded campaigns, expect nothing to change. This is why I said "It's all bad". I think is safe to assume that all rational, reasonable people in NY know that the parties are irrelevant and that public employee unions have corrupted the entire system. Six months ago: "Yeah, so lets get more public employees, giving the unions more power, and really see how f'ed up things can get!!!!" Until, again, reason and accountability showed up, as they are always bound to do, and knocked this ridiculous hubris back, at least one step anyway. How else can you explain what happened? The word "coup" isn't right here. It's not a "coup" when you have a majority of Senators. It's not a coup when you have a vast majority of NYS residents. But that's the word that is being used because the far-left is being significantly challenged here. Hey NY: it's about friggin time! It's not a coup when a small minority of dumbasses with way to much power, who have consistently failed, get kicked out of office. It's the will of the majority, the exact opposite of a coup. Albany,n.y.
I can't see any lengthly court battle, here's why. The senators can switch parties any time they want. At the moment, the 2 senators have chosen to remain Democrats, but caucus with the Republicans. However, if they needed to switch to Republican in order to make it "legal" they'd do it. There is nothing a court can do to stop Democrats from switching to Republican or vice versa. Just look at Spector at the US Senate level, and many others before him at all levels of government. There is no case, anything brought by the Democrats is a total waste of everyone's time.

But that alone won't necessarily make this a short court battle. This is afterall NYS where factions war over issues long after all reasonable people would have packed it in and called it a day. The thing I am hoping is that this clogs up stuff on the Senate side and nothing comes out of Albany, at least until after the next election cycle is complete. (Who knows, maybe they can find a way to drag it out beyond that one as well.) If they aren't in session, they can't raise taxes and they can't increase spending. Bishop Hedd
Finally, a decent topic.
