deep2evans Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 This thread must have been sucked into a black hole back in April. That's the only rationale I'm willing to accept. My head hurts. Furthermore, we didn't sign Maybin, we drafted him. Also, McKelvin was ahead of DRC on just about every draft list last year, with the exception of people who never watched either guy play, but may have caught a Chargers game in 2007. Lastly, the reasons for picking Maybin over Orakpo are pretty easy to understand - not really sure why "for the life of me" that you don't get it. Orakpo is a workout warrior from a school known for producing busts, including a guy that burned our organization 7 years ago. Maybin had a huge year last year, but folks may be concerned because he's only done it once. The Bills felt Maybin's upside is higher - it's not really the brain teaser you deem it to be.
SKRAAPY Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Simple: there's no prevailing consensus to suggest the aforebolded. If you're aware of one, please provide a link. fair..the only argument i could really offer is that orakpo never really moved out of the average top 10 mock drafts..whereas maybin, everette brown, tyson jackson, and ayers all moved from top 10 areas to as far as 2nd round
tonyjustbcuz Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 The draft really made me upset! I study the draft several months in advance, buy all the draft magazines, look at all the mock drafts online, and prepare as if I had some input...lol....Just an obsessed fan I guess? Anyways, I was also upset when they passed on Orakapo. I also was certain they would go for Everette Brown DE at some point seeing that they had 3 opportunites to get him! They could have drafted Everette Brown and Brian Orakapo and probably solved the DE position for a long time! and still drafted an Offensive Lineman with one of their 3 first picks in rounds 1 and 2. I didn't like any of their picks until Shawn Nelson (TE). I also didn't like the way they handled the Philadelphia trade for J. Peters ! They should have been able to get Philly's 21st pick vice the 28th they got! I don't like any draft where at least 4 of your picks are likely going to shift positions because of different factors such as size or speed etc..... If your going to reach like they did with Levitre for instance then that player shouldn't be drafted to take a step into the unknown of switching positions. He is no lock to be a starter or successful with the switch. If you look at the Bills drafts from the past 5 years or even 7 or 8. You see a trend of poor overall production and eventually the player often is either out of the league in 3 years or with another team. Reveiw the our draft and you will see just how poor our track record is. The Bills unfortunately try to be cute, and out-think the draft experts! I really believe if you handed me 3 draft magazines, and access to the internet that I could draft better than the Bills management does 9 out of 10 times. So, getting back to the beginning of this I would say without that Aaron Maybin may only be a situational defensive end and will never have the frame to sustain the NFL grind for more than 5 or 6 years tops!
thewildrabbit Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 It certainly looked to me that Maybin has a higher probability of turning out to be a bust, but then his upside can be better with that first step he has, the old adage "you can't teach speed". Maybin only has one move ATM and that is running the arc untouched, once a linemen gets his hands into him he is done. So he has a good deal to learn about being an NFL DE, and an enormous amount about to learn about the OLB position should the Bills want to use him as such or drop him into coverage. I'd be willing to bet that the coaches talked with Poz about Maybin and then came to the conclusion that Maybin was the better pick over the "Rak". From my limited view I'd have drafted Orakpo, the guy looks like a monster, but then I'm just a fan

(at least on the website on ESPN to follow the draft live) had Maybin as the third rated player in the entire draft. Like a 97 grade on him. I was using ESPN's follow the draft website, and they had him higher than a lot of guys on their draft board, anyways. I love the guy's attitude, he's a good interview, and appears to be happy to be in Buffalo, but he looks more like a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE.
Dr. Trooth Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 I'll make it real simple. Five letters, that's why.... T-E-X-A-S Go back over the past 20 years. Count how many Texas players were drafted in the first round. Then, figure out how many of them were busts. Oh, and add Orakpo to that bust list.

From my limited view I'd have drafted Orakpo, the guy looks like a monster, but then I'm just a fan Put me in that category. I couldn't believe it when we passed on Orakpo for Maybin. I think Maybin is too light for a DE and I think he'll be dominated by NFL linemen and handled by NFL tight ends. Time will tell. If we end up switching him to OLB, I would also consider it a squandered pick, because this draft was clearly about stocking the lines.

Fingon Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 The answer, lies right here: Earlier in the day, NFL.com’s Gil Brandt offered up a glowing review of Brian Orakpo’s Pro Day workout. But not everyone feels that way. Per one league source, some scouts viewed the linebacker/defensive end’s workout as “brutal.” According to the source, Orakpo is regarded by some as having “great athletic abilities but bad football skills.” It’s prompting some to question whether Orakpo merits even a first-round pick. If this sounds familiar, it should. There’s a chance that Orakpo could be the latest in a line of “looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane” players, including past first-rounders like Vernon Gholston and Mike Mamula. (Then there’s Alabama’s Andre Smith, who as one reader pointed out after Smith’s recent shirtless sprint “plays like Tarzan, looks like Jane.”) Even Gil Brandt, who is regarded by many as having a bias in favor of Texas football, acknowledges that Orakpo is “one of those guys that appears to play hard 90 percent of the time, but takes a vacation the other 10 percent.” It’s the kind of attitude that could put a coach or a G.M. on vacation 100 percent of the time if they pick Orakpo, and if he doesn’t deliver. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/25/...orakpo-workout/

The Bills didnt go with the next best they went with who they felt had the most upside. The NFl doesnt always look for the better college player but whose skills can be coached and polished into the best professional player.

bluv Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Why did the Texans pick Mario Williams over Reggie and Vince Young? The NFL draft is a crap shoot and you can't evaluate until the players put the pads on, touch the field and get playing experience. If 3-4 years from now Orakpo ends up being a stud while Maybin is a bust then you can whine. Who knows, E Brown may be the best out of the bunch then a lot of us and the experts will act like they knew all along.

How many times do you hear "brutal" being used? Methinks that Maybin report was bogus and indicative of the usual stellar reporting by PFT.
C.Biscuit97 Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Gotta love the offseason. People female dogging about players who haven't even taken a snap yet. Awesome.
