zazie Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Maybe the eagles can teach fatty how to block a safety blitz instead of cluelessly looking around and blocking no one, all the while complaining, "it wasn't my responsibility." I thought Fatty was our NEW LT, not our old LT who is a physical speciman.
zazie Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 When I read the sour grapes posts by other Bills fans it makes me feel embarrassed to be a Bills fan. Personally, I don't blame Peters for wanting more money, the average life span of an NFL player is 3 years and they need to get as much as they can while they can because they never know if a career ending injury will happen in the next game. Not only that if RW isn't going to pay what a player is worth when they are considered one of the best at their position... again I don't blame him for leaving. Bill O line coach Jim McNally was a very highly regarded coach in the NFL before he retired, he took a free agent TE and turned him into a 2x pro bowl tackle and compared him to legendary Bengal tackle Anthony Munoz. When is the last time you saw that happen? Did any of you take a moment to consider that McNally retired last off season and Jauron promoted an unknown to coach the O line, and that new coach didn't get the job done? The entire line stunk last season, not just Peters who missed all the OTA's and training camp. I can recall Kris Jenkins caving in 3 blockers and still getting to the QB, both guards and the center tried to block him and couldn't get it done. Andy Reid stated he thinks JP is the best left tackle in the NFL, we will see if he is right. It wouldn't surprise me to see Peters make the pro bowl again this next season as an Eagle. Anyone think any Buffalo Bill O linemen will be going to the pro bowl this season ?

Combine that fact with the fact that our FO (sorry, I know everyone hates anyone bashing them) was overmatched by his first rate agent, and that tells the whole story. He is making what he deserves (and more than we would have had to pay him end 2007 season when we demanded he play LT for a low to average RT salary) now, on another team. We got a draft pick out of it and I hope Wood is a monster who anchors our line for 10-12 years. Because that's what Peters is going to be for the Eagles; we gave up a sure thing for a maybe 50/50 shot. JMO.

Interesting perspective - erroneous, I think, but interesting that you perceive our FO was 'overmatched'. Frankly, I think our FO won the battle hands-down when they faced off last season and Peters' side blinked. Peters was just too stupid to realize that the Bills have a history of rewarding players who show up and do their jobs. IMHO, the Bills finally grew weary of the Peters continual demands for more more more while not showing up for work, or giving anything more than a modicum of effort when he finally did show up. I also think the Bills are of a mindset that Peters is not as great as some members of his fan club think he is, and that his play will continue to decline in direct proportion to his ever-increasing demands for more money. Only time will tell who's right and who's wrong, but as a Bills fan, I hope Peters sucks even worse in Philadelphia than he did in Buffalo last season... GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!!
Ramius Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I thought Fatty was our NEW LT, not our old LT who is a physical speciman. Fatty is our old jackass LT, now on philly, who was too self-centered to actually show up for camp and be in shape for the season. Instead he rolled in (literally) late and proceeded to give up sack after sack, game in and game out.

I agree - the FO won, and rightfully so. There's a lot of sour grapes posters here, but regardless of what you think of Peters abilities on the field (and I think he is a major talent), how can the FO reward JP's behavior when his hold-out hurts the team like it did, and JP takes so little pride in his conditioning and game play when he did show up? There may be some Bills that don't fit the "high-character" profile as well as Marv might have liked, but I'll take any of them over JP if they work their butts off and give it all they have on game days. The FO couldn't reward JP's attitude and work ethic and still hold the control, command and respect of the team. FO won this showdown.

In the 2009 showdown, however, the first round is--at best--a draw. Peters got exactly what he wanted, he's the highest paid LT in the NFL, so I can't really consider that a loss. Now, nobody can argue that he won, because Buffalo did get Eric Wood and Shawn Nelson out of the deal, and they both could become very good NFL players.

I would have to agree - adding only that, as Peters is now an ex-Bill, I don't much care who pays him what. He's Philadelphia's problem now. (Although, I believe Jake Long is the highest paid LT - which will no doubt lead to another Peters holdout in 2010. ) I know the Bills will survive - and thrive - without him, and I consider him one of the more selfish players the Bills have ever groomed and given an opportunity to make a fortune playing a game he's loved since childhood. Good riddance, Peters, and... GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!!
Sisyphean Bills Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 BTW, that article was about how Peters is going from A-line blocking in Buffalo to B-line blocking in Philly. Trying to derail the discussion with facts, eh?
thewildrabbit Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 After reading articles from various football sports writers my take is that basically there was no way RW was going to pay Peters the money he was asking for, 5-6 million maybe, not 11 million. Well Philly gave the guy what he wanted and lets see what he does this season, I think he will exceed their expectations. The Bills found him, taught him and brought him along over the last few years and trained him until was regarded as one of the top LT's in the NFL, then they trade him away. Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield, Jason Peters, Ruben Brown, it seems like every time a Bills player has become elite at his position the last 10 years he ends up leaving Buffalo. It is almost like the bills are getting to be a farm club for other teams. This reminds me of exactly the same thing that happened with Pat Williams, another free agent find turned star, who went to the Vikings after the Bills refused to pay him what he was worth. sadly the Bills defensive line has never been the same against the run since he left. You can call him fatty and whatever slur you can think of, but he is the one laughing all the way to the bank and Bills fans have been crying ever since his departure.
Steely Dan Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 The only thing Peters blocked last season was his arteries. I wanted them to keep Peters but after his comments about letting his contract affect his on field play I said good riddance. If the Bills had given him the big contract he wanted I think his attitude wouldn't have changed much. He would have declined with Buffalo even after getting what he wanted and will have more drive in Philly. By signing with Philadelphia he should have a chip on his shoulder to prove Buffalo made a huge mistake. I'm dying to see how the fat looks against the DE's in NY, Washington and Dallas. Umenyiora will eat him alive, IMO. IIRC, he had a very low Wonderlic score and that's gonna make it a lot harder for him to adjust. Good riddance to bad trash. JMO

Eric Moulds, Aaron Schobel, Lee Evans, Marcus Stroud all say hi! And Ruben Brown was very close to over the hill. He was let go because of poor play, NOT because of salary cap reasons.
