Wendling

Recommended Posts

With the glut of talent at the S spot (not to mention 'tweeners), keeping Wendling on almost solely for ST looks less likely. He had several nice plays, as I recall being "impressed with that Wendling kid." But it's a crowded house. Coy Wire was one of the leading ST guys and they cut him and plugged in someone else, and we hardly skipped a beat.

I'm tempted to say that April's schemes are more important than the actual players. The importance of ST --- and especially tackling phase --- looks to be getting taken down a notch with the new rules disallowing return "wedges," more liberal definitions on return blocking penalties, or bunching for onsides kicks.

We'll see on camp. Only the best 53 (+8 PS) survive the cutdown. The NFL seriously needs to increase the roster size by ~2-3 especially as guys are getting serious injuries from being overexerted, pressure to play hurt/concussed b/c a team is short on players, and as the league is looking to subtract preseason and add to the regular season next year.

I don't understand why the NFL just doesn't allow the teams to dress all 53 on game days. They are only allowed, I believe 47 plus a 3rd QB. This is one of those screwed up rules that leaves me scratching my head. All 53 players are being paid full salaries and a various 6 don't even have to work on Sundays for it. F$cked Up!

On the Wendling topic, the only chance he has to make the team this year is either beating out Scott for a backup SS or turning into a Steve Tasker overnight. He's a damn fine football player and nice guy but the roster limitations really create depth issues at so many positions.

It is to even out the teams in terms of injuries. If you dress all 53, and one team has serious injuries, they can't replace anyone for the game, putting that team at a serious disadvantage. Not dressing 6 or so guys allows for a team to not dress an injured player, and in tern, substitute and dress in a healthy player.

Makes sense but the 46-47 number still seems a bit low in terms of bodies on game day. It just seems to make sense to increase the game day number to 50 or so, give teams an option to have a single week IR system wherein, the team can move a player from the practice squad for that given week just to have the numbers at the position that is low because of injuries.

The whole thing, on the surface, appears in need of a makeover because of the 53 players being paid full salaries with another 8 making "minor league" money. I'm thinking something along the lines of MLB where they can shuffle a player back and forth from the minors based on depth due to injuries on any given day. The system just needs some tweaking IMO.

Have read and heard lots of talents on the special teams. Could he be our modern version of Steve Tasker?

IMO, no.

Great athlete, but he doesn't appear to have a fraction of the football smarts Tasker had. His future has to be in question, since he can't seem to get a wiff of the field except for ST. Hard to carry a ST-specialist if he can't do something else as well (like play WR, return kicks etc. like Tasker could).

I don't know about him getting cut. Our ST coach is the assistant HC and probably has more say over the bottom 8 guys on the roster than anyone else in the organization. Couple that with the fact that Wendling is solely a ST player and one of April's favorites (he plays in all 4 phases of ST), he will msot certainly be on the team for game one. I would think it's going to be either him or Ko, and if that is the decision I don't think many people would get the outcome wrong.

Don't disagree. But unfortunately, unless he makes a move this TC, it appears that all he'll ever be is a ST guy--which makes him vulnerable to the 'next guy' who can show more positional backup / potential starter capabilities.

I tried to broad jump a 66 inch concrete wall once. Except I had just taken a bunch of muscle relaxants and I didnt realize the top of it was slippery. So instead of looking cool like Jim Wendling, I skinned my shins.
