I already returned the game to SONY once, and yes I checked this disc for smudges, etc. Is it possible that a bad save at this point in the game is causing the glitch? Sounds like a bad save...but my brother had issues with his PS3 on NHL09 similar to that. He reformatted his HDD and has never had an issue since.
