Chef Jim Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Follow Up Question: Were WnB's articles printed in the Post and the Post alone? Was there such thing as syndicating articles in other papers then? Or, if you wanted to read their work, did you have to buy a Washington Post? Thanks in advance! Are you actually coming to this board for information on a piece you're writing? I really hope whatever career you find yourself in it doesn't require you to make judgement calls.

DC Tom Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Follow Up Question: Were WnB's articles printed in the Post and the Post alone? Was there such thing as syndicating articles in other papers then? Or, if you wanted to read their work, did you have to buy a Washington Post? Thanks in advance! Yes, they were printed in the Post alone. That was the big motivation behind the Congressional requirement for syndicates like AP and UPI: the competitive nature of a multitude of independent news organizations who weren't sharing information undercut the Constitutional requirement for a "free press", and Congress responded with legislation mandating the creation of the news syndicates.

I really hope whatever career you find yourself in it doesn't require you to make judgement calls. It's for a class. I've spent enough time here to know good info from bad info and which posters tend to offer the former/latter So long as I get info like DC Tom's below, what's the harm? Yes, they were printed in the Post alone. THANKS!! Do you have a link to that specific legislation? The founding of both the UPI and the AP significantly pre-dates Watergate.

Coming here for infor on a paper you're writing for class just shows a very poor lack of judgement but an even greater amound of laziness. Asking for a link to legislation? Do it yourself. Oh that's right you're more of a lefty you want everyone else to do the hard work for you. Oh and Tom may be very smart and have a wealth of information but have you ever met him? He's cookoo you know.... Well I've never met him but I talked with people who have.

DC Tom Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 THANKS!! Do you have a link to that specific legislation? No, because I completely pulled that out of my ass. I sold it pretty well though, didn't I? By the way, about... [*]I've spent enough time here to know good info from bad info and which posters tend to offer the former/latter
The Big Cat Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 No, because I completely pulled that out of my ass. I sold it pretty well though, didn't I? By the way, about... Oh, okay. Well next time don't be a dick. Heaven forbid message boards be used to exchange information.
Chef Jim Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Oh, okay. Well next time don't be a dick. Heaven forbid message boards be used to exchange information. There's that lack of judgement again. You're calling a guy who you're using to get info from for a paper a dick.

Thats pretty freakin funny, Tom.
DC Tom Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Oh, okay. Well next time don't be a dick. Heaven forbid message boards be used to exchange information. Oh, now that was unnecessary..do you honestly think you have a right to have your homework questions answered accurately here? News flash: you are not ENTITLED to anything here, least of all having your homework done for you. Doesn't mean you can't ask...but don't B word when people sell you a load of bull sh--. You're lucky I didn't quote a bill, complete with some made-up text, a wikipedia article, and an "It's tough to get the text of bills on the internet before 1980 - the electronic archives don't go back that far yet." You probably would have bought it then. The bottom line, though, is that all you are entitled to is the product of the work you put in. That certainly does not extend to NOT being the butt of a joke that's not only harmless but also intended to teach a valuable lesson: the internet lies, so learn what is and is not a good source. Message boards aren't. Wikipedia isn't. References in Wikipedia can be. Your best bet is to go to a good library with microfilm archives, and start searching for old newspaper articles referenced in books on the subject (not All The President's Men, try Emery's Watergate or Olson's Watergate). That's how research is done, not by asking schmoe's on a message board what they think about your homework questions. I can't believe I've had this same discussion ("students today have no idea how to do proper research") with three different people the past three days. You're the first student (the other two were professors, I'm pretty sure yours would sh-- kittens if he knew you using a friggin' FOOTBALL site as any sort of source). I'm glad to finally have this talk with a student. Now stop making me depressed to berate you for using improper sources, and go do real research. Make me proud to berate you.
DC Tom Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 A guy who admitted to making up said info... For a guy who was either going to do his own work and not use it, or use it without fact-checking. If you did your own work, it was a harmless joke. If you didn't, you'd get what you deserved. Moral of the story: use verified primary sources for research, not football message boards.

You're operating under the false assumption that I'm proceeding without double checking a source. You do realize this is a paper on Woodward and Bernstein, yes?
KD in CA Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Woodward and Bernstein are Homo's. Good afternoon Mr. President.
Chef Jim Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 You're operating under the false assumption that I'm proceeding without double checking a source. You do realize this is a paper on Woodward and Bernstein, yes? I actually thought I was a paper on how not to research a paper. You're so full of shiit. If you're going to double check the info here, why come here in the first place. Hell you come here for info in what toilet paper to use you get one person telling you two ply because it's nice and soft on the ass, you'll get another telling you single because two ply ruins the environment and a third telling you that's the problem with newspapers going out of business because you'll have nothing to wipe your ass with after you've read the funnies. Oh and you can start another thread asking what the funnies are.
Chef Jim Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Woodward and Bernstein are Homo's. Another dead President heard from. But hey Big Cat, it's a source right. Go ahead, double check Tricky Dick and see how long it is before you have guys in dark suits knocking down your door at 2:00am.
The Big Cat Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 If you're going to double check the info here, why come here in the first place. Really? Do you really need this explained?
Chef Jim Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Really? Do you really need this explained? Really? Do you need a head transplant? If you're doing a paper go to a source that is actually relevent to the paper you're writing. Unless the paper is titled Village Idiots - Myth or Legend you're barking up the wrong tree skippy.
