mcjeff215
I had that thought a couple years back too. Salaries for tech. folks in WNY are lower and real estate isn't as much (a big old abandoned warehouse would work). Rig up a bunch of VOIP gear and bring in some big name technical support contracts. A little more than offshore, but (theoretically) one can provide better service.

I can't say too much - I did grow up in Medina a town that has nothing on Olean.
Lori
Olean is about the same as a third world country Nope, they have electricity and indoor plumbing now. And the people who came in from all over the country for last week's sportswriting symposium at Bona had plenty of nice things to say about the area, as well. Hopper, you're roughly the same age as Vaccaro and Wojnarowski, right? They were both back, of course ...

None of my Bona friends were communications majors (strangely enough) though. However there were 3 Bonnies on my Myrtle Beach golf trip this past weekend. (A member of the common council was there, too. Yup, I'm quite a power player. ) I attended two Communications Days at Bonas when I was in high school. Phil Pepe spoke one year. He was fantastic. Chuck Pollock told me that no one should major in journalism if they want to get rich. So I committed myself to other pursuits. If you heard me on the Huskie Half on WHDL, you'd agree I made the right choice.

If you heard me on the Huskie Half on WHDL, you'd agree I made the right choice. Sorry, WHDL doesn't come in too well down here. Chuck's teaching a class on sportswriting at SBU now, you know. (And yes, still telling students that if making money is important to them, they may be happier going into a different field.) I don't think I know anyone who loves their job more than he does, though -- and watching people congregate around him in a room containing some national columnists and sprinkled with a couple of Pulitzer Prize winners, I'm not sure I know anyone more respected by his peers, either. After about the 20th person stopped by to say hi, Budd Bailey laughed and told me, "It's like walking around with a senator."

Nice to see a little loyalty in actually keeping jobs in WNY, let alone the US. Corporations that jumped on the outsourcing bandwagon are now finally realizing that communicating in English to Indians (Dot, not feather) is very difficult. Delta Airlines has learned that lesson and moved out of India.

Too bad no one ever asks about the lack of "loyalty" from local government when they are driving up the cost of doing business to unsustainable levels. Bullpen
Been to Salamanca? It's like Somalia without the pirates...........oh wait, even worse........an Indian casino Oh man, you ain't kiddin'! I was home this fall and I had to go down to Salamingia a couple times and couldn't believe it. It reminds me of Jamestown's and Olean's dirty little brother that neither claims. (I'm sure I'll get skewered for that comment.) to Indians (Dot, not feather) Jesus, that's funny for some reason. I'll be sure to use that qualifier from now on. Next you'll see cell towers .... Good response. Or fancy Schwans trucks delivering food!!!!

I read the Post most days on the train home. IMO Vaccaro is one of their better columnists. Also like Joel Sherman. But my favorite is Phil Mushnick. I just can't get enough. Civil Service protection, sometimes union protection. See private sector - lift leg. The buzz here in CIN lately, is the anger being expressed by city retirees over the thought of their zero-cost medical coverage now having to face a $100 yearly deductible and a $10 co-pay for a doctor visit. All scripts, of course, are paid 100%. And still getting 90% of their highest salary - per month - when they retire. It pays to be an apparatchik loyal to the Party, eh?
