after all these years of All in the Family, i finally figured out that second to last line of that song "Gee our old lasalle ran great..." Lord knows what i have been singing for over 30 years. I love the internet! <_<

There is actually another version of that song I have heard recently. With diff lyrics than the one opening the show...

It's a great little song - especially if you can sing it in both voices (without hurting yourself doing the dingbat!)

"Now don't nobody go saying anything about Sammy Davis's glass eye."

"Sammy would you like some sugar in your eye? I mean glass"

For years I thought they were singing, "Gee our old salary rent rate". I couldn't figure out what the hell they were talking about, maybe the cost of living?

I've been catching episodes on Nick at Nite recently. That show would be a hit TODAY and it strikes me how little progress we've made as a society since it was in its heyday.

no way would that show even be on the air as a regular prime time spot today.

No, but it'd be a hit on HBO.

The song was modified a few years into the series, to make it more clear in response to inquiries.

The LaSalle was a design of the late Harley Earl, noted auto stylist who has been mentioned in some recent Buick advertisements. It was a initially a comtemporary of the early Cadillacs, but ended up as a mass-market, somewhat upper echelon vehicle. Link below.
