Steve O Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 supposedly Orakpo takes plays off....if that's true, I'm glad we didn't get him we may indeed be a bit gun shy draftingTexas players with a rep for taking plays off
WordByrd Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I give it a B. I would have gone higher if they didn't waste the last 3 picks. Absolutely. Exactly what I'm thinking.
H2o Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Bills potentially get 5 starters in the first 5 picks including what NFP said was the steal of the draft in Shawn Nelson, and we get a C-? Wow...when this draft becomes the core of some very good Bills teams a few years down the line, hopefully he remembers that grade... I give us a C grade. We used 4 of our picks on DB's. That was completely retarded. I understand Byrd, I understand Nic Harris(even though I hate the pick), but I don't get the last 2 at all. I don't care what the twisted reason may be or the dunce logic, they were foolish picks. Maybin could be great, but I'm not sold on him either. I love the Nelson, Wood, and Levitre picks though. So 4 of our picks were good, possibly great, and 4 of our picks were iffy at best. A C grade makes complete sense.
Fingon Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 We get an A. We got a bunch of tremendous players at areas of need.
DCBongo Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 This was the first draft in a while where I wasn't asking WTF with the first few rounds. Sure we need to see if any of these guys pan out in the long term, but when the Bills actually address needs in the draft - who knows what else they might do...like sign a veteran OT to protect Trent's blind side. Strange days indeed.

But we will draft a CB in the 1st next year anyway.
dave mcbride Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 They also said it was their vain attempt to grade the draft as you can't really do that for 2-3 years. On paper the sheer number of db's makes higher grade more questionable. 3 DBs, right? Nelson was probably chosen to play LB. The final two are for special teams, and legend has it that CBs/safeties play well on special teams because they can actually run ...

Acantha Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I give it a B. I would have gone higher if they didn't waste the last 3 picks. You think a defensive front 7 player is a wasted pick? And a special team player in the 7th rounds is pretty normal for any team in the draft. I don't think we needed a CB with the 6th, but there wasn't anyone there of great value. Any pick would have been a crap shoot. Overall I say B+, but only because Maybin makes me nervous. If he's as advertised, it's an A.
2020 Our Year For Sure Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Isn't Nelson going to play LB? If so, you're talking about 3, not 4. And I'm not sure I'd conflate secondary with special teams ... Three DBs, but only 2 CBs, and no corners until the 6th round. There's a key difference between corner and safety: safety was a need, corner wasn't.

billybob Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 1a. is Arron Maybin Robert Mathis or Manny Lawson- will he be an every down player by his second year or just a pass rush specialist? it will be interesting to see the comparison between him and Orakpo and Ayers 1b. Eric Wood is a very safe pick - not the most upside but very little downside 2a. Byrd - either the Bills are geniuses or morons- there was a lot of talent still on the board when the Bills decided on a slow, short corner who they projected would make a great FS- if he doesn't start and play better than Ko Simpson, then someone needs to be fired 2b. Andy Levitre- another Safe pick but if he can't beat out Butler you've spent an awful lot on a backup 4. Shawn Nelson - If a 4th rounder can produce his first year it's all gravy 5. Nick Harris vs Marcus Freeman 6. Carrie Harry- Is Jauron the anti-Al Davis if you're a DB with a forty under 4.65 he don't want you 7. another DB just to throw salt into the wounds
H2o Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Another spin on this deal. What if they are considering moving McGee to FS, McKelvin to #1 CB, Florence or whoever to #2, Byrd in there some where, and letting the other two guys fight it out for a roster spot (likely meaing Cary Harris makes it)?
Lurker Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Isn't Nelson going to play LB? If so, you're talking about 3, not 4. And I'm not sure I'd conflate secondary with special teams ... That's where they have him listed on the roster... (and Bryd at FS)
Steely Dan Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I thought the draft was excellent. We very well may have found our future center, gaurd, DE, FS, TE, and depth at CB and LB. B+ Russ in my view had a very successful draft on paper What he said.
dave mcbride Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Three DBs, but only 2 CBs, and no corners until the 6th round. There's a key difference between corner and safety: safety was a need, corner wasn't. ST is always a need.
keepthefaith Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I love how all pundits give such hard grades for the draft. Kiper will come out tomorrow with probably one A- and a ton of C's and D's. What is this-- the curve at Harvard Law School? The graders suck more than the "gradees." Well let's face it, you can't grade the draft at all at this point.
NavarreFL_Bills_Fan Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Easily would've been an A if the Bills grabbed a tackle...considering it is their second biggest need...second to some pass rushing. I cannot disagree with the grade of a C...simply on the premise that the FO shoulda addressed tackle.
BLZFAN4LIFE Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 1a. is Arron Maybin Robert Mathis or Manny Lawson- will he be an every down player by his second year or just a pass rush specialist? it will be interesting to see the comparison between him and Orakpo and Ayers. I think that Orakpo will be a MUCH BETTER pro than Maybin 1b. Eric Wood is a very safe pick - not the most upside but very little downside Agree. Good pick. 2a. Byrd - either the Bills are geniuses or morons- there was a lot of talent still on the board when the Bills decided on a slow, short corner who they projected would make a great FS- if he doesn't start and play better than Ko Simpson, then someone needs to be fired Would've rather had DT, OT, or LB, but a lot of people are high on this kid, so we'll see. 2b. Andy Levitre- another Safe pick but if he can't beat out Butler you've spent an awful lot on a backup Glad to get a big man, but didn't care for the trade up. If he works out, it's all good. 4. Shawn Nelson - If a 4th rounder can produce his first year it's all gravy Great pick. 5. Nick Harris vs Marcus Freeman Don't get me started on picks 5,6,&7!!! 6. Carrie Harry- Is Jauron the anti-Al Davis if you're a DB with a forty under 4.65 he don't want you 7. another DB just to throw salt into the wounds Overall, I give this draft a C. I am not expecting much out of Maybin as a pro. I think he'll be decimated by NFL Tackles, dominated by Tight Ends, and handled by running backs. If I'm wrong about Maybin, then the grade increases significantly.
Endless Ike Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Good, maybe this will shut up all the idiots on this board who think it was the greatest draft ever with 6 new starters These guys are not sure-fire talents, and we've still got a number of huge holes
