oregonbbfan Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Every pick has a fall back or option. Maybin DE/LB, Wood C/G, Byrd CD/S, Levetre G/T, Nelson TE/WR, Harris S/LB. I like to think it's versatility and they will do very well in each of the projected positions but we could have a lot of tweeners that may just be ok at either. Are we covering our butts and playing it safe in the event they miss at what we project them at so it's not a miss? Playing for versatility may allow you to miss on differencemakers and sets you up for more mediocrity. Are we playing safe, reaching or setting up a solid/versatile base?

Are we playing safe, reaching or setting up a solid/versatile base? Really? Someone ought to mention that to the Patriots. They better come up with new receipe for success.
oregonbbfan Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 With all due respect, they already have the difference makers and can afford the versatility type guys.
SouthGeorgiaBillsFan Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Your logic is flawed. You actually have to be *better* to play more positions, not worse.
oregonbbfan Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Just saw that BillsFanForever was thinking the same thing but said it a little differently. On the SouthGeorgia response, true you must be a better athlete but you don't always want the jack of all trades but the master of one.
UConn James Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Having such players also might come in handy for the next coaching regime. Gotta consider how much Russ is hedging his bets for when/if Jauron is canned in the near future. Especially on the defensive side. OL guys typically move around. Nothing new to that. But changing a core defensive scheme is Maybin as a Tampa-2 DE can play OLB in a 3-4. Byrd can/has played any DB spot. Harris could return to S (or #1 backup) in a more traditional 3-4 or 4-3.... "Versatility" might also be a safeguard against having obsolete/the wrong players when the system is changed.

Maybin, Wood, and Levitre were in the top 3 in their respective draft postion. Peters was a TE in college and transitioned to RT, then LT. Butler was an RT and transitioned to RG... and it is looking more like he may move to LT. Langston Walker came out as a T and played LG. RT, and LT... all of them fairly well. Jim Ritcher was drafted as a C and had a stellar career at G. James Harrison was a DE in college and made the transition to OLB in a 3-4 Nolan Cromwell was a QB in college and had a great careet in the NFL as a safety They are all pretty good football players. These guys will get it done... wherever it's decided they best fit.
