JohninMinn. Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 you pretty much hit the nail on the head, how that idiot made the hall of fame is beyond me "idiot" where have the Bills Fans gone? this place is being overtaken by kids.
KOKBILLS Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Dave, I'm glad you like you some Whitner. I like him too. He's awright. Reminds me of a young Pierson Prioleau.

Kelly the Dog Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Excellent post Badol, as usual. I am usually a very optimistic guy but there isn't a lot to make me think this year is going to end well either. I do, however, think we: 1] Have an excellent receiving corps, arguably the best in the league top to bottom in WR, even if TO isn't the TO of old. 2] Have an excellent 1-2-perhaps-3 punch at RB and we will be able to withstand the 1-3 games Lynch will miss from suspension. 3] Pretty darn good CBs overall, IF McLovin makes strides and there is every reason to believe he will. He may be the missing playmaker. 4] Fabulous special teams overall... But, of course... 1] The OL is in shambles. 2] TE doesn't exist 3] Weak overall across the D Line although Stroud was pretty damn good last year and Schobel back will help tremendously even if he isn't a star. 4] Ellison stinks but we will draft a guy and sign the ex-Colt and be mediocre there. Poz and Mitchell are decent enough. I think we're going to see a much better Poz but I wouldn't put money on it, more of a hunch. 5] Edwards is unproven and very likely to be clobbered and hurt. Fitzpatrick is the kind of back-up you can rely on for a half here and there, or a game, not half a season. But the real problem is on the sidelines and upstairs. I agree with Jauron just being a horrible head coach even though he's the nicest guy in the world. A Head Coach needs to do about 10-12 major things, and good ones do most all of them well. Jauron does one of them well: He gets his guys to play hard. But... 1] he doesn't make good in game decisions 2] he doesn't make good crucial decisions 3] he doesn't make good in game adjustments 4] he doesn't make good halftime adjustments 5] he doesn't make good game plans 6] he doesn't put his best players in positions to excel 7] he doesn't have the knack for knowing when to be aggressive 8] he's a defensive coach but he doesn't have a signature defense or style or anything he really adds, 9] he doesn't make good calls on challenges (although I usually don't blame that on the head coach), 10] and he doesn't win big games, 11] and he doesn't win. That ain't a good coach any way you slice it. He also doesn't hire great assistants. There is also nothing that gives me confidence in drafting great players or especially in finding great FA players. The vast majority on both sides have been seriously underwhelming. The GM doesn't inspire confidence in anything except marketing, I think it's a terrible mistake to have a non-football doing your negotiations and signing players, and the owner is meddlesome and just plain nuts (and I love the guy). But the draft is one of my favorite days of the year! Go Bills!
spartacus Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 If he played so poorly, then how did a team with such an abysmal pass rush have the 14th ranked defense overall, allow the 4th fewest TD passes, and finish 13th in passing yards allowed despite both starting CBs as well as their nickel CB (Youbouty) missing significant chunks of time? Please break down Whitner's game for me in a way that accounts for this, and please don't rely on anecdotal examples like "but he was knocked silly by Sammy Morris." From my perch, the Bills very rarely looked out of position in red zone pass defense outside of the Arizona game. Sure, they did poorly on the INT front. There's no disputing that. But that's as much a function of pass rush than anything else. Whitner was the only constant in that secondary last year. they played a great many offenses last year that did not score a lot they ran the ball and scored enough to beat the Bills senseless - but not enough to skew the stats check those defensive stats this year against a much tougher schedule
spartacus Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 First off, thanks for the response. WRT Jackson...who was the better back last year, in your opinion? Seemed to me, Jackson made more of his opportunity from the RB position than Lynch... Jackson: 130 rush for 571 yards, 4.4 ypc, 3 TD, 37 receptions, 317 yards, 8.6 avg Lynch: 250 rush for 1036 yards, 4.1 ypc, 8 TD, 47 receptions, 300 yards, 6.4 avg So, Jackson has the better YPC number, nearly half as many TDs, a better yard per catch number, no off the field issues and somehow he's NOT the better back? I would even venture to guess that if he played an entire season as the starter, he'd put up better numbers than Lynch would for a whole lot less money. Russ needs to re-sign this guy ASAP. Oh, he can return kicks/punts too. You'll get no argument from me that coaching killed the Bills last year. Look at the Losman fumble in the Jets game last year. WTF was Jauron thinking calling a pass play there? That being said, Whitner did NOT back up his big talk with big play. Maybe if he had an Ed Reed type season and talked that kind of smack, I'd give him a pass. Dude, they should have beaten the Fish and Jets at least once each last year. No reason they shouldn't this year, especially with Kellen Clemens under center for the Jets. Jackson is the more explosive guy capable of big plays His skill set is what you should get when you pick a back at #12 in the 1st round. not a slow dumb thug that can't run patterns and has trouble remembering what hole to run to .

In none of those games against better QBs did the pass defense perform poorly except the AZ game and the first Dolphins game. And in the first Dolphins game, McGee was playing on one leg. The Bills generally lost for other reasons, like an inability to score against NE. In the first NE game, they held them to 13 until the very end. Also, they never played against Marc Bulger or Derek Anderson.
Sisyphean Bills Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Also, they never played against Marc Bulger or Derek Anderson. I know. I didn't claim they did. The guys they did play against didn't average 14 attempts per game so didn't make the rankings. I wasn't claiming that the list was a "flawless study". I just thought the clustering of Ls and Ws was somewhat interesting.
