Tipster19 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 The teams that would be in the running for someone like Pettigrew are the Eagles (#21), Falcons (#24) and possibly the Dolphins (#25). I can't imagine Philly going after Pettigrew, especially if they trade for Anquan Boldin. Even if they don't trade for Q then I believe that they'll address their DL. There is some serious rumblings going on that the Falcons are still trying to work out a trade for TE Tony Gonzalez. That would increase Buffalo's chances tremendously if this trade goes thru. I say the Dolphins but that's just because Parcels likes jumbo OL and rugged guys at the TE position but other than that I truly feel that it's really just down to the Eagles and Falcons. Now, if only if the Falcons could secure that trade for Gonzo.

There are not a lot of offensive weapons in the draft and a lot of teams in need of a TE. If the Bill's took him at 11 I would be a little disappointed. If they traded down to around 18-20 I would feel better.

IMHO they are serious suitors of both Moreno and Pettigrew. Adding Pettigrew next to Peters and Andrews would be very tempting. for Philly.(and for Bills fans, oh, what might have been) The Falcons are still after a tight end until they obtain Gonzalez, and since they haven't yet, it's wishful thinking they wont take Pettigrew. The Jets are also a possibility. Lombardi at the National Football Post insists they want and need a tight end despite taking Dustin Keller last year. We Bills fans are so desperate for a receiving tight end we are forgetting receiving tight ends like Keller, etc. can only be utilized to their fullest extent when they are not needed to help out the offensive line. I'm sorry, but looking at our OL- our tight end will be doing alot of blocking. Not getting Philly's earlier first round pick really hurts- that seemed like a great place to get Pettigrew.
Tsaikotic Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 ok Im really not getting the man love for Pettigrew at all...everything that I read and hear about the guy is that hes best suited as a blocking TE and doesn't have any real speed to stretch the field at all..most say hes a short yardage TE at best...so why the man love?...are we really looking for another Royal to be added when for the last 4 years at-least everybodies been screaming for a receiving threat TE?...Personaly I'd rather grab a TE like Coffman...If the Bills FO feels Fine can be the answer at TE then I'd prefer they wait till they grab the posiotions they really need before looking at Pettigrew..but thats just my opinion

It doesn't matter though, we always find a way to not address the TE position properly, I'm sure this year will be no exception.
atlbillsfan1975 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 If the Bills got Curry at 11 and Petigrew at 28. Then i would poop myself. Not sure either one is possible. But yes there is hope it could happen. If it did both would be out to prove something. And the Bills would get two very good/very motivated players.
Acantha Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 ok Im really not getting the man love for Pettigrew at all...everything that I read and hear about the guy is that hes best suited as a blocking TE and doesn't have any real speed to stretch the field at all..most say hes a short yardage TE at best...so why the man love?...are we really looking for another Royal to be added when for the last 4 years at-least everybodies been screaming for a receiving threat TE?...Personaly I'd rather grab a TE like Coffman...If the Bills FO feels Fine can be the answer at TE then I'd prefer they wait till they grab the posiotions they really need before looking at Pettigrew..but thats just my opinion Pettigrew is a great all-around TE. His blocking is well documented, but if you haven't seen him play you are probably underestimating it. He is excellent at finding his blocks at the second level and taking LB's completely out of play, and he's he's agile enough that he doesn't let CB's get around him without slowing them down. He can also hold his own (more than most TE's I can think of) along the LOS in pass blocking, though I've seen people say he's like another tackle there, and I can't agree to that extent. He's good, but he's not up to that level. As for receiving? Everyone seems to be focused on the fact that he isn't a burner, but who cares? The whole "stretch the field" saying is so over hyped for that position. Pettigrew CAN catch. He knows how to find the open space in the field, makes smooth catches, and turns quickly to pick up what yards he can. He's even more dangerous because every time he releases people are trying to avoid him because they are expecting a block, but then he sits in space and makes the catch. Can't recall how many times I saw just that happen. This is exactly what the Bill need. They apparently have enough WR's....so much that they are trying to unload them now. Coffman was fun to watch in college, and will probably have some success in the NFL, but my bet is he gets his clock cleaned more often than not. At this point, especially with the Peters trade, there are half a dozen players I'd be happy with at 11, all of them along the lines, outside of Pettigrew. And if we take Pettigrew, there's going to be a part of me that stings knowing how weak our lines are, but a big part of me knows that he is going to be a very solid player for years in the league. He's not a highlight reel guy, but he's going to be a very good starter for a long time I think. Out of all the players I expect to available, IMHO he's the surest thing.
offde-fence Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I don't think there is any chance of Pettigrew being there at 28. There is only one guy at each position who is the best, and only maybe ten total that are consensus #1 at their position. This guy is agreed upon by everyone to be the best TE this year, and perhaps the most overall complete in the last four or five years. Someone is going to give up a first before 28 to get a sure-fire starter, and one has to consider this draft is deep in TE talent, so, for him to be consensus #1 he must be damn good. I've stated before, and it applies here, that the Bills should be looking to put the best team they can on the field this year, and not looking to the future. This is it for Juaron, and who knows who else. So, I say, we have four or five positions to fill, to have a really decent roster. Lets move up as much as possible to land four or five starters out of this years draft. I know, some of you will say, that's too many for one draft. Well, I say this draft is perfect for us this year with our needs. TE is deep for three rounds, DE is deep in the first two rounds, OT is round one now, probably, but OG is good through three, and OLB is good through three. If we can move up with all our picks and whatever is necessary, to land a starting DE, OLB, OT, and maybe OG, and TE, then we've done good. Next year we can worry about depth. Here's a potential look: 1. (11) Oher 2. (28) Mathews, preferrably move up to get E. Brown, or any combination of Brown and Oher in RD one 3. (2nd rd) Robinson 4. (3rd rd) best TE 5. move up to 3rd rd for best OLB if we haven't got one yet. In first 3 rounds we could get OT, OG, DE, TE, and OLB - that'd be pretty good, and finish up with best prospects left in whatever round and Rookie F.A.

Magox Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Tipster, I don't see him making it to the 28 spot. Most draft geeks have him rated as a top #8 overall prospect. Someone will most likely scoop him up. If we don't draft him at #11 Then I'd hope we'd try to trade down and get him some where around #20 and throw in a third or fourth to secure him.

Nightcrawler Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 No way Curry at 11 and Pettigrew at 28. These pre-draft hallucinations are getting ridiculous!! Yep! Curry at the worst goes #5, Pettigrew at the very worst goes at #21
C.Biscuit97 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Philly goes with Knowshon, Atlanta trades for Gonzo, and Miami wants a CB.... Plus, Miami has Fasano who had pretty solid year. Every year, I try to be not to develop any attachment to any player before the draft. But I have a straight up bromance with Pettigrew. He is a throwback TE and not some pansy, "receiving" soft new mold of TE. He is a football palyer and would be a prefect fit in Buffalo.
billsfan714 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Im with a lot of ya. Im sick of the Bills always putting off the TE position. Its not like we have the scariest offense in the league last year. The running game seems solid, TO and Evans should be good, why not add the final piece with a Blue Chip TE instead of our usual disposable 4th round, journey man type TE selection. The best case IMHO is to hopefully someone is there at 11 that someone wants to move up and grab and we can move down a few spots. And get an extra pick. Draft could go like this..... Bills trade pick 11 for pick pick say 17 and pick up a third. At 17 Bills take TE Pettigrew At 28 Bills take OT either Britton or Beatty who's ever left 2rd Bills take DE Connor Barwin or Larry English Bills trade a third and a fourth to move back into the 2nd round Bills second 2rd Bills take OC Eric Wood or Jonathan Luigis Remaining 3rd Best available OLB
SouthGeorgiaBillsFan Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Don't you think the fact that Philly didn't give up that pick kind of indicates their intentions here? The only way I see the Bills landing Pettigrew is by taking him at 11 or trading up ahead of the Eagles. Either way I think the bills need to forget about drafting an early TE. We have no tackle and no guard. We also are one or two good players away from a solid looking defense. TE is just not a position that impacts a game nearly as much as a DE or OT, because DEs and OTs play on every down, regardless of formation. We also have enough threat on the outside and in our backfield that if we can keep Trent on his feet he is going to move the ball. Let's see a couple of big hogs in the first round. In the unlikely event that Pettigrew falls to #28, it becomes a no brainer for the the Bills to draft him there. But you guys need to seriously stop pretending like losing Jason Peters didn't put a #11 or even #3 pick sized hole in our line.
Tipster19 Posted April 22, 2009 Author Posted April 22, 2009 I know that it doesn't sound like a big signing but I would like to point out that the Chiefs have just signed TE Sean Ryan. He's a blocking TE who was someone that Bill Parcels has signed in Dallas and Miami. I believe that this gets Tony Gonzalez closer to getting traded to Atlanta. I really don't believe that the Eagles are all over Pettigrew, contrary to popular belief. I think that the DL is of more of a priority for them at this time. They have TE Brent Celek and Matt Schobel (Aaron's brother). If they were looking at a TE, I would expect him to be more of the pass catching type to replace LJ Smith. After thinking about it in depth more I would be more concerned if the Eagles were to trade for Boldin. The Cardinals are in much more of a need of a TE like Pettigrew than the Eagles.
2020 Our Year For Sure Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 The local papers here seem to think the Jets are taking Pettigrew at 17. They envision Keller as an H-back/recieving specialist, and Pettigrew as the all-around in-line TE.
The Jokeman Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Yep! Curry at the worst goes #5, Pettigrew at the very worst goes at #21 Disgree with Pettigrew at #21. I know the Eagles lost LJ Smith but look at what Brent Celek did for them down the stretch and in the playoffs. It looks like McNabb favors him so not sure they need a TE. Toss in Sheldon's Brown recent rants they might be inline for a CB. The local papers here seem to think the Jets are taking Pettigrew at 17. They envision Keller as an H-back/recieving specialist, and Pettigrew as the all-around in-line TE. and what QB is going to be throwing to them?
A Dog Named Kelso Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I just don't see that happening. A TE of his caliber will not fall past #20. If they traded down to around 18-20 I would feel better. I admit I am pretty ignorant about the draft but I do not understand this statement and others like it. I mean, if you need a TE and he is available at 11, why do you care if he is taken at 11 or 20? I do not understand why it matters if, of course, your choice for the team's first pick is a TE. Can someone explain this to me?
