Fezmid Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Hey all -- This spring, we've started to notice some flying insects in the house. They don't seem to be bothering anyone, but they're getting annoying. At first, there were only a couple every few days, but now we're seeing a few a day. They generally seem to like hiding in the corner of the wall and ceiling. They fly around rather clumsily, having to land frequently. They mainly seem to be flying around our second floor where the bathroom/bedrooms are, but we've seem a few of them on the first floor as well. We live in the Twin Cities, so insects are generally "sleeping" during the winter, and these guys must've woken up and decided they like flying around our house... I was able to take a picture of one of the buggers; although it's not a very good shot, it should help in identification. They're pretty small - generally an inch or less. http://www.fezam.com/bug.jpg

If so, it could be an Case-Making Clothes Moth. They generally feed on stored grains (cereals or flour usually in someone's house). Check your cupboards/pantry for any contaminated food. Many times you also see them in your closets, as the name suggests. Again, I'm not sure that's what it is. If you can get me a better pic, maybe I can confirm or find the real culprit.
HereComesTheReignAgain Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 It looks like the incredibly rare South Zimbabwe Death Moth. One sting and you will die a slow painfull death the likes of which nobody on this continent has ever experienced.

The next time I see one, I'll try to take a better picture -- they're tough to photograph, since they usually hide in the corners like I said. Don't see any around the house right now, but will keep my eyes open - at least a couple will be back in the morning, I'm sure...
The Dean Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Rare jungle tsetse flies. Watch out, they will carry small children into the sunset.

I should've known better than to ask a serious question. See if I help either of you two in the future

Check your upstairs closets, if they are clothes moths and on the 2nd floor, I'm guessing you have bedrooms up there (or possible clothes stored an attic). The adult moths come out for mating and fly towards light sources, so if you leave a bathroom light on, you're likely to get more in there. Of course, I could have jumped to a completely wrong conclusion.... If the wings are more smooth, that is not covered in scales (you know how if you grab a butterfly and the stuff on the wings smear off on your hand a little), well if they're not like that, it could be something completely different more along the lines of a type of caddisfly. Which would mean its coming in from the outside and not a cause for worry at all other than being a nuisance.
Dan Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Name the movie... (not an exact quote) African Queen? Like I know movies....
Jim in Anchorage Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 I would go with a 12 gauge pump, slugs for the sitters and 00 buck for the flyers.
Steely Dan Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 It's a Moth-ER. It won't leave the house until you clean your room, wash behind your ears, eat all your vegetables and give her a kiss. I should've known better than to ask a serious question. See if I help either of you two in the future Name the movie... (not an exact quote) Deano's last gay porn tape.

mead107 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Could be this - http://www.e-bug.net/forum/messages/9926.shtml
Fezmid Posted April 20, 2009 Author Posted April 20, 2009 It could be tiny spy robots sent by the recording industry. Maybe that'd be funny if my name was TraceyLee. But it's not. Could be this - http://www.e-bug.net/forum/messages/9926.shtml Looks similar, but I don't think the ones in my house have two colors. I'll have to check closer. I did get a better picture of one this morning, so I'll upload it when I get home.
Cheeseburger_in_paradise Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Terminix has an excellent pest library on their website. Try terminix.com and see if you can spot a better picture of it.
Fan in San Diego Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Hard to tell from the picture but I think it is a termite, they swarm this time of year looking for a new house to eat.
Fezmid Posted April 20, 2009 Author Posted April 20, 2009 Hard to tell from the picture but I think it is a termite, they swarm this time of year looking for a new house to eat. That was the first thing I thought of -- but it doesn't look like any of the termite pictures I've seen online so I don't think that's what it is.
