Happy Dyngus Day

Recommended Posts

Dyngus Day just happens to fall on my birthday. Calls for excessive celebration if you ask me.

Cool site by the way. Growing up in the boonies I never made it to Buffalo much as a kid so I never saw most of those places but I do remember the Super Duper sign from Arcade seeing we drove past it every Sunday in the winter on our way to Ellicottville to ski. Also there was one in the big city (to me anyway) of Attica when I as a kid.

Dyngus Day is your heritage!

If the beer companies every found out Dyngus Day it would become a national holiday. A drinking holiday between St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo, where women in wet T-shirts are considered an old world tradition? Where do I sign up?

You beat The Senator to the punch, this year. I believe it is one of his favorite holidays, too.

The main party is HERE!!!

Just to get in the BCT to check it out is worth it. Some day it will be a Buffalo landmark again. Well I guess it is still a landmark even today, just one that needs a lot of work and even more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The BCT...a gorgeous building in the worst part of town. It deserves to be saved but what do you do with it?

And if you've never heard the band, Those Idiots, it's worth the trip alone. They are great fun and usually only play on Dyngus Day and at the Dozynki Harvest Festival. They have a few clips on youtube, but I am blocked here at work...

Agreed, I threw down a few dozen Tyskie's listening to them last year! They do a great rendition of the Ukranian hit "Ty Zhe Mene"

Ya sculpt a full sized bar out of a single block of ice, and watch the vodka flow...

(Seriously, the Seneca's could have had a casino & hotel fully completed and up and running there 2-3 years ago if they weren't stuck on putting one right downtown. Now, the next best shot at restoration is the high-speed rail project btwn BuffTown & Albany/NYC...

You are probably unaware that last year they ran out of pivo (beer) around 8 PM, maybe earlier. (It was the first year Tyskie was the official beer - if Labatt or Bud was a sponsor, there'd have been an 18-wheeler with taps on the sides out in the parking lot.)

The BCT is cooked UNTIL that part of the town turns, because you are right, there's no part of Buffalo worse

What do you do with it? Within a couple miles of the BCT, What these guys did

I grew up in St. Stan's parish a few blocks from BCT. (BCT is really in Corpus Christi's parish.) We used to play football in the grass fields along Memorial Drive. The BCT was a haunted house even back in the early 70's. It would be a tragedy if they ever tore the BCT down. What kind of shape is it in structurally? Is it even savable? As for the neighborhood, it is what it is. Goo Goo Dolls John Rzeznick grew up on Sweet St. just stones throw away.

It is very savable, and structurally sound. The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) has gone to great lengths to seal the building from the elements and secure the entire property from further vandalism. My dad & I try to take part in the annual volunteer cleanup of the grounds and minor maintenance.)

Unfortunately, much of the building's fixtures have been gutted - the clock was found in an antique shop in Chicago and has been repurchased thanks to a grant from Wilmers/M&T Bank, some of the art deco sconces, fixtures, etc. from the diner have shown up in a restaurant in Hong Kong. All of the marble stalls and paneling in the rest rooms have been removed (stolen), or just smashed to pieces for the hell of it.

The biggest problem is finding a viable reuse for a hulking monstrosity like the BCT, in a neighborhood that is largely residential. We had hoped the Senecas would see the value - the CTRC even put together an adjacent parcel of 25 acres for gas stations, smoke shops, etc., but the SGC wanted their casino downtown. Right now, the high speed rail facility, maybe even coupled with some sort of railroad museum (there are way more train buffs out there than I ever realized) is probably the most viable plan.
