anyone familiar with tablet pc's and writing with the sylus?

I have an compaq tablet pc, i downloaded the drivers for the stylus and that seems to work fine, however i am unable to write using the stylus...is there additional software to enable that functionality? i am googling as i type this...any help would be appreciated...thanks
