bartshan-83 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 We haven't had one those pleasant "**** Cop vs. Punk Athlete" debates in awhile. ESPN Link
Lori Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 "I can make your night very difficult." Like the imminent death of his mother-in-law wasn't already putting a crimp on the evening. Yeah, yeah, policemen never know what kind of situation they're walking into when they make a stop, etc., etc. Duly noted. Still sounds like a power trip to me, and for running a red light? C'mon.
slothrop Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I vote gaping wide ****. It is guys like this cop who give police a bad name.
KD in CA Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 You can't fault the cop for stopping him and you can't fault him for being cautious with the situation (see: Oakland). Cops have to deal with 'hysterical' drivers all the time and are correct to deal with them firmly (see: any youtube video of some idiot getting tazed for refusing to get out of their car). But from the quotes it sure seems like he went out of his way to be an a-hole for no particular reason. on the cop.
plenzmd1 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 its a hard thing for the Police. When I got the call my Mom was taking a turn for the worse, I booked a flight that was really cutting it close. as I was pulling into Reagan, got pulled over for speeding. Told her waht was happening, had like 25 minutes to plane left(pre9-11) and could she PLEASE hurry up. All she could say was she was required to do her job and that included running plates etc. Yep missed the flight, and I was pissed. But looking back , what else could she have done? She was not an azz about it like it sounds this guy was, but still.
Lori Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 That's the difference, plenz. Attitude, and I'm not talking about Moats. It gets better (or worse, perhaps): Dallas police: Officer drew gun during traffic stop of NFL player outside hospital The couple, along with Collinsworth’s father and an aunt, jumped into the SUV and headed back toward the hospital. They exited the Dallas North Tollway, just down the street from the hospital. Moats turned on his hazard lights. He stopped at a red light, where, he said, the only nearby motorist signaled for him to go ahead. He went through. Powell, watching traffic from a hidden spot, flipped on his lights and sirens. In less than a minute, he caught up to the SUV and followed for about 20 more seconds as Moats found a parking spot outside the emergency room. Tamishia, 27, was the first out. Powell drew his gun and yelled at her to get back in. “Get in there!” he yelled. “Let me see your hands!” “My mom is dying,” she explained to him. Powell was undeterred. “I saw in his eyes that he really did not care,” Tamishia Moats said. “Honestly, I don’t think I cared that he had a gun pointed at me. My train of thought is that I’m going to see my mom in the hospital before she dies.”

Thats just cold, and my opinion has just changed to Cop is a complete AZZ
Ramius Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Nothing but a prick cop. No police force needs his kind of scum. There's being cautious and then there's being an out-and-out **** simply because you are on a power trip. EDIT: i actually fault him less for pulling the gun than holding moats there. He onyl pulled the gun because someone charged out of the car. That makes sense. But what happened after was beyond ridiculous. Hmmm, lets see. Emergency room parking lot, entire family in the car, claims they have a dying relative inside. Seems to me the cop could have used (what obviously little) neural matter he's got between his ears to find out if Moats was telling the truth.
yall Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I was pissed when I read the transcript, but after watching the video, I'm a little less outraged by the whole thing. While I understand Moats was under some stress, he was clearly being a prick to the cop as much as the cop was being a prick to him. Edit: That being said the cop went way overboard and continued to be a c*$% sucker once he had established WTF was going on.

Remember, 2 nurses andf a fellow police officer urged release of Moats but to no avail.
renfruzetz Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Sadly, it was a ugly situation all around. I don't blame Moats, the cop or the passengers although they all contributed to the poor handling of the incident.
PromoTheRobot Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 They are at a hospital keeping someone from seeing his dying relative. There is no reason why the cop couldn't escort Moats into the hospital and write the ticket outside his mom-in-laws room. This is just an example of a cop on a power trip. Probably a C-average grad of a community college or online U criminal justice program. Just a punk with a badge. PTR
UConn James Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 When the exchange was at its most contentious, Powell said he could tow Moats' SUV if he didn't have insurance and that he could arrest him for fleeing because he didn't immediately stop when Powell turned on his sirens. The pursuit lasted a little more than a minute. Just to show you what a POS this cop is.... You do not have to stop immediately. For instance, a number of women in CT were sexually assaulted by a man pretending to be a state trooper who pulled them over in a dark stretch of highway. Police are supposed to be trained and exercise the knowledge that it is allowable for drivers being stopped to pull into a lighted area or a place off of a main thoroughfare (for both safety and traffic purposes), as long as it's a reasonable distance, they drive slowly, and it's probably a good idea to point to where you're going to pull over, then explain why you did so. Absolutely heartless, especially after the nurse and fellow cop vouch, and I hope karma comes back around on him.
D_House Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Dallas police chief embarrassed by officer's actions: http://www.wfaa.com/video/index.html?nvid=345864
BuffaloBill Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Truly sad situation ... the cop overstepped his bounds and did not show compassion.
Booster4324 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/...short-man-says/ Not an NFL player, but this story is local around here and lots of condemnation. Only not even a review of the officers actions. No big, county needs the revenue after all.

I believe you can also dial 911 and give them your location and they'll verify that it is a real officer pulling you over.
