In-A-Gadda-Levitre Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Bills needs: Tight-end, pass-rush playmakers wanted The listed starter at tight end for the Bills is Derek Fine, who doesn't exactly remind people of Antonio Gates. He had 10 catches as a rookie last season. Derek Schouman is more of an H-back type. The Bills have needs on defense that might supersede the choice to take a tight end -- especially in importance. They have pass-rush woes and could use a rush end in the worst way. They had just 24 sacks in 2008, four from their top three ends.
John Adams Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 TE is a luxury. Most TEs suck. Bills biggest needs are pass-rusher and LB. Not sure the O-line holes are filled yet either. All of those are more important than TE unless there's some stud available.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Most TEs suck. Well said; I would also add that that is especially true of rookie TE's. A couple of guys from last year's class started playing well by the end of the year (Carlson & Keller), but I wouldn't hold my breath on getting immediate production from a rookie TE.
Lofton80 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I can't agree with Prisco post the TO trade. How could the team need a TE more than an interior lineman, OLB or defensive tackle ? Prisco's biggest need can be filled by Coffman, Nelson, Casey or the Florida TE in round 3. I like Casey a lot.
Endless Ike Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 If you look at a lot of the TEs who have produced in the last few years, one of the thing that really stands out is the lack of a viable WR option on the team Gonzo in his best years was the number one guy with not much for secondary targets, same with Heap, and even Gates (although that may be changing as they've got some decent receivers recently). If you've got really good receivers, you don't need a dominant TE. I don't think there's ever been a team alive whose #1 need was a Tight End
BuffaloRebound Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. Depth is lacking and they could use some help behind the five starters." Who the F is Brandon Rodd? This dis-credits everything else in the article.
qwksilver Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. Depth is lacking and they could use some help behind the five starters." Who the F is Brandon Rodd? This dis-credits everything else in the article. When do practice squad players get mentioned at all? Atleast i think that's where he is?
tennesseeboy Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Our biggest problem is pass protection. Our downfall was TE getting a concussion and getting rushed through the remainder of the season. NOTHING else is even close. A far second is pass rush. We do not put enough pressure on the qb. This should be addressed before addressing anything else. I see a Defensive lineman in round 1 and an offensive guard or possibly a center at 2 and a gaurd at 3. I think the rest of free agency should be addressed to clear up these two problem areas. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS>
lets_go_bills Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 We sorely need both a TE and a DE. Not to mention a OG and an OLB.
The Dean Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. Depth is lacking and they could use some help behind the five starters." Who the F is Brandon Rodd? This dis-credits everything else in the article. Porn star? Perfect name for one. http://www.nfl.com/players/brandonrodd/profile?id=ROD096901 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/...ayers/4738.html BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter at the left tackle and left guard spots. POSITIVES: Hard-working small-area college tackle who projects to guard in the NFL. Blocks with good knee-bend, keeps his feet moving throughout the action, and quick in all aspects of the game. Stays with the action, makes good use of angles, and seals defenders from the play. Fights with his hands and works to hit as many people as possible. NEGATIVES: Lacks footwork and range and struggles to adjust. Must improve the strength of his base. ANALYSIS: Rodd was an adequate college blocker who showed improvement in his game the past two seasons. He'll have a chance at the next level if he improves his run-blocking strength.
ddaryl Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 TE comes after OL DL and LB TE is a luxury pick for the Bills
Leonidas Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. Depth is lacking and they could use some help behind the five starters." Who the F is Brandon Rodd? This dis-credits everything else in the article. Seriously. Apparently he was practice squad fodder last year. Wouldn't Chambers, and even Bell, be ahead of this guy?? You've got to think Prisco just looked at a roster and threw him out there with his "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent" comment.
Never NEVER Give-up Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 The Prez is right. TE is a luxury compared to our need positions - both lines and LB's - and there's plenty of talent in those positions at #11. Does anyone remember that sure fire, can't miss TE the 49'ers chose last year? Vernon Davis! He's not exactly lighting it up, heck the Jets' Keller had a better 1st yr. Now Davis may end up being good or even great but my point is the payoff will not be in the 1st year (see James Hardy). We need linemen or LBs Cushing or Mauluga (sp?) from USC.
Leonidas Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Is anyone else expecting us to fill more holes through free agency? I know I am. We could trade a second day pick for Scheffler and sign a LG and an OLB and have very little to worry about. I will say, though, now that we're getting closer to the salary cap, that trading up for a top 10 pick (i.e. Orakpo) seems even less likely than it did before.
Fan in Chicago Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Is anyone else expecting us to fill more holes through free agency? As time ticks away I am getting less and less hopeful. Unless the hole filling you are referring to is a shovel full of dirt in a truck-sized hole. Back to the OP - I do not agree TE is a top priority right now. As other posters have said, we badly need help on the DL and OL.
Philly McButterpants Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 "Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. Depth is lacking and they could use some help behind the five starters." Who the F is Brandon Rodd? This dis-credits everything else in the article. Yeah, I was gonna ask the same thing . . .WTF?
1billsfan Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Bills needs: Tight-end, pass-rush playmakers wanted He calls Kelsay a "disappointment". That's like calling Andy Reid "big-boned". Maybe he forgot about what a pass rush did to Tom Brady in his last full length game. Just slipped his mind I guess. These national guys are clueless. The Bills need a DE, a OLB and more OL help before they need a freaking tight end.
bizell Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I like how they have a picture of Chris Kelsay accompanying this article.
Fingon Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Travis Beckum could be had in the 3rd. He has the best combination of production and combine numbers of any TE this year.
Trader Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Bills needs: Tight-end, pass-rush playmakers wanted Even if he is right, which he is not since we do not have a starting Guard, it does not mean we pick the players in that order. That should be determined by the depth at each position of need, The availability of free agents and the overall quality ranking of players regardless of position. You need to take each and every factor into account. Like the Steelers, and the Pats do. Not like the Bengals, Bills and Niners have done.
