But hopefully he has the sense to get a new CBA done quickly, curb rookie salaries and avoid an uncapped year. www.pattonboggs.com/dfsmith DeMaurice Smith is a trial lawyer and litigation partner at Patton Boggs who concentrates in white-collar criminal defense and "bet the company" tort liability trials. He is Chair of the firm's Government Investigations and White-Collar Practice Group. No NFL background. Perfect for NFL Players sue even if player is wrong mentality. I am sure he will help keep the older players from getting share of NFLPA profits Heard plenty about him locally since he is from Washington.

I am sure he will help keep the older players from getting share of NFLPA profits Heard plenty about him locally since he is from Washington. Where are you getting that from? Firms like Patton Boggs don't bring "bet the company" lawsuits; they defend them. The NFLPA is not a profit-oriented organization; I'm guessing you're talking about retirement benefits. How are you "sure" that he will continue the status quo with older retirees? And who cares about NFL background? The previous guy had it--but he didn't protect older retirees. Are you just trying to B word about something, and stumbled on this?
Rico Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Peter King "I'd heard Vincent planned to drive a hard bargain with the owners, and if he couldn't get a deal, he'd have pushed the players to play in their own league in 2011 and beyond, if necessary." Further proof that Troy Vincent is a cancerous POS.

I guess they thought it would be more divisive to elect him. Who knows? Only the player reps, and from what the reporter on Sirius was saying, they're not even talking to their agents 'bout this.
LabattBlue Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Reducing the amount of money handed out to rookies should be #1 on the owners list of negotiation items they bring to the table and the Bills should bring Mike Williams in as Exhibit A. It is ridiculous that established veterans in the NFL are never going to come close to what some of these guys are getting without ever setting foot on an NFL field. I'm surprised the NFLPA would even support the current rookie salary pool structure since it is such an injustice to its existing membership.

R. Rich Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Upshaw's late wive came out the other week & said that Gene wouldn't have wanted Vincent to take his place.. slammed him pretty hard. . Yeah, they mentioned that his widow wasn't too keen on the idea of him being elected. They also touched on how Upshaw had a change of heart in terms of Vincent being the heir apparent and how he disassociated himself from Vincent before his death to where they weren't even on speaking terms.
LynchMob23 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I'm surprised the NFLPA would even support the current rookie salary pool structure since it is such an injustice to its existing membership. They support it, at least philosophically Labatt, because it's money going to a player that's in the NFLPA.

LynchMob23 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I don't think so, could be wrong though. I thought they could not become a member until they signed a contract. You are right there Beerball, but once they sign (prior to signing their contracts) they are members and therefore the money (to them) is going to a member. Some of the rank and file guys would prefer it go to a vet, but the "get that money while you can" attitude overrules that at times. I think Ross T wrote an article about it a bit ago...
Steely Dan Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Linkage UNION CLAIMS NFLPA VOTE WAS UNANIMOUS Posted by Mike Florio on March 16, 2009, 1:28 p.m. EDT Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Daily reports that the election of DeMaurice Smith as the next Executive Director of the NFL Players Association was unanimous, citing several unnamed player reps. The press release announcing the outcome also contends that the vote was unanimous. Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports thinks (accurately, in our view) that the notion of a unanimous outcome is being floated merely to tweak the owners, who unanimously voted last May to cancel the labor agreement two years ago, even though it’s widely believed that more than a few of them were content to continue with the deal. “The idea that 32 billionaires or near-billionaires can completely agree on any complicated issue is a farce,” Cole writes. If the vote truly was unanimous, it means that Smith absolutely crushed the field during interactions with the members of the board of player representatives. Given that at least three of them endorsed David Cornwell in writing in order to include him in the process, it’s fair to say that those three came to Hawaii inclined to vote for Cornwell. Looks like the anti-Troy Vincent lobby won out. Now for the new CBA!

The NFL should do like the NBA and have slotted salaries, related to the player's draft spot. No complaining and all rookies in camp, on time. They support it, at least philosophically Labatt, because it's money going to a player that's in the NFLPA. I think the veterans, who make up the majority of the NFLPA, have to be pissed at the money going into the pockets of rookies instead of established players like themselves. I'd have no problem if rookie salaries were dummed down and all the "leftover" money went straight into enlarging veterans' contracts.

Not yet, and the union is filled with veterans that are pissed off about the new kids getting contracts bigger than long time proven veterans. This has to be addressed. I truly believe that the next CBA will have a slotting system for rookies. The majority of players in the union want a rookie slotting system but the NFLPA will be using this as a bargaining chip. I can't believe the owners will fall for it though. If I were negotiating for them I'd tell them ok we don't need a rookie slotting system and watch them sweat. If that's not a part of the next CBA IMO the vets will be pissed beyond belief.
