BillsGuyInMalta
Get er done Russ, I've heard of him, blah blah blah. Still though, this might be an option for us. Either bring him in and put him at RT and move Walker to LG, or keep Walker and put Shaffer at Guard. He's still relatively young too, only 29. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/12/...ns-cut-shaffer/

LynchMob23
He played LG for the Falcons way back when, so it's not brand spanking new to him....
DanInSouthBuffalo
If this rumored trade of Peters to Philly ever took place the Bills could slide Walker to LT and sign Shaffer as RT. Chambers could play guard. I'd like that.

Thurman#1
Different line positions require different skill sets and different physical types. Any suggestion saying "and then move this guy here and then move that guy there..." is inherently flawed. Linemen aren't interchangeable cogs, and just because you can play one postion well doesn't mean you can play another well. For a game or two those experiments are OK. For a career, they rarely work out. It usually ends with a trade or a cut and people saying "Gee he was so much better a few years ago," forgetting that he no longer plays the position he best fits. quikchomp
Different line positions require different skill sets and different physical types. Any suggestion saying "and then move this guy here and then move that guy there..." is inherently flawed. Not necessarily. Sure, saying "move Peters to center, Hangartner to RT, etc..." is flawed. But, there are some players who have experience in different line positions (Hangartner, Duke Preston). Ruben Brown played his entire college career as a tackle, but was moved to guard by the Bills as a pro. For an extreme example, Bruce Matthews, recently elected to the Hall of Fame, played all five positions on the line, and made the Pro Bowl as both a center and a guard. So, while it was good usage of the word "inherently", it was actually your argument that was flawed.
San Jose Bills Fan
To add some meat to the discussion: Kevin Shaffer Birth Date March 2, 1980 Birth Place Salisbury, MD Height 6-5 Weight 315 lbs. Age 29 Position OT Experience 8 years College Tulsa ProfileStatsSplitsGame LogNewsScouting InsiderPhotos 2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc. Grade: 66 | Grade means player is an average starter Comment: Shaffer was signed two years ago to be Cleveland's starting left tackle. That experiment failed and after Joe Thomas was drafted, Shaffer moved to the right side, which clearly fits him much better. Shaffer is very strong and has the size and skill set needed to best play on the right side. On the left side, his athletic ability was exposed, but he has performed admirably on the right side because he doesn't have to consistently face elite speed-rushers. Shaffer also greatly benefited from the emergence of Thomas at left tackle because the Browns are able to give him help, if he is overmanned. He isn't very nimble or fluid, but does work hard. His pad level is a problem and he lacks the ability to consistently play the game low. He is a powerful man and pushes defensive linemen backwards as a power blocker. He is a thumper who plays to the whistle and is bright enough to get the most out of his physical abilities. There isn't much upside here, but Shaffer is certainly good enough to win with, especially with an elite talent like Thomas on the other side. He was graded as a tackle. Sounds like a guy who could possibly make a good guard.

San Jose Bills Fan
Dude! Walker is not a LT...I know he's played there like...one game but that doesn't mean he can hold down the spot the whole season. Too fat and slow IMO. He also played the entire preseason at left tackle and played quite well. Of course the preseason is not a good test case but Walker is underrated by Bills fans. He's been a good signing IMO. If you TiVo the regular season games in hi-def and replay the plays over and over like I do to watch offensive line play, he played quite well last season. I'm not saying he'd be an elite left tackle. He only has fair lateral movement but is very good at positioning and is very strong and has long arms. I bet he's better than at least half the starting left tackles in the league.
Conch
We must sign Peters. We can't keep allowing our best players to leave in their prime. Winfield, Clemens, Pat Williams, etc. It forces us to spend high draft picks are positions that were once solid. The cost to develop a new LT through draft picks, trades or signing old pros is too risky and keeps setting the team back. Sign Shaffer and between the guys signed and drafting a G or C in round three the O-line should be set for a few years. Drop down a few slots and draft Pettigrew in round 1 and we should be able to pound the ball as well as throw the ball all over the field. It would be a very tough offense. Take a DE/LB in Round two, Ayers or Johnson may still be there. Get LB depth in round four or round 3 if we get an extra pick for dropping back in round 1. Remember too we also have five Def players coming back that hardly played last year...Schobel, DiGiorgio, Bowen, Youbouty & Ellis. Bowen and Ellis should step up as useful depth and special teams, Digiorgio and Youbouty are quality back-ups and potential starters.
