Owens, released by the Dallas Cowboys last week, becomes the No. 1 wideout on a team that suddenly has some firepower. But while playing for the Bills helps the value of the players around him, Owens actually loses luster. This is by far the least-potent offense Owens has been a part of in his career, so he’s no longer a No. 1 fantasy option at his position. Instead, T.O. should be seen as more of a No. 2 wideout in most formats. The move does improve the value of Trent Edwards, who should now be considered an attractive sleeper candidate and a better No. 2 fantasy quarterback. Lee Evans, a superb threat in the vertical pass attack, should also benefit from the standpoint that he’ll draw the opposition’s No. 2 cornerback rather than its top defensive back. However, he’s now closer to a high-end No. 3 fantasy wideout than a No. 2 option across the board. James Hardy, who’s coming off a disappointing rookie season, now has no chance to start and holds minimal draft value. With Owens and Evans in the pass attack, opposing defenses will no longer be able to stack the line of scrimmage to stop the run. That’s good news for Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Of course, fantasy leaguers need to monitor the status of Lynch, who could be suspended at the start of the 2009 season due to off-field issues. One thing is for sure — the Bills will be getting a lot more attention next season, both in the NFL media and in fantasy circles. Whether it’s good or bad remains to be seen.
