March Movies: Watchmen, Race to Witch Mountain & Monsters Vs. Alie

The Spring Season for movies in 2009 rolls in with a bang, as the month of March looks like it has brought the box office an early Summer season. With the way the economy has been, more and more people are turning to movies for entertainment as it is considerably cheaper than other venues. Even the lesser months of January & February were bringing in big numbers with surprise hits like Paul Blart & Taken. Now people will be lining up to see movies with bigger stars & premises.

The one movie that has been on the minds of many fanboys and curious moviegoers is "Watchmen". Ever since the first trailer was released with last Summer's The Dark Knight, people have been asking just what is "Watchmen" all about? Set in an alternate vision of the year 1985, the murder of an ex-superhero causes a vigilante named Rorshach to look into the matter. An investigation that reunites him with his surviving old colleagues -- all of them former superheroes themselves -- and gradually unveils a conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Warner Bros. & Paramount have been placing many tv ads for this film and are banking on a big return. The film got even more publicity a few months ago when a lawsuit was issued by 20th Century Fox, claiming they still had the rights to the property, which threatened the film's release. Thankfully the matter was resolved. With the recent success of films like Iron Man & The Dark Knight, people are seeing that not all comic book movies have to be flashy and have tons of special effects in order to be a good movie, a good storyline helps too. Despite the hype and curiousity surrounding "Watchmen", the movie does have obstacles to overcome. 1) "Watchmen" is not as widley known as Batman, 2) It's "R" rating will prevent from having an even bigger opening than a "PG-13" rating would have, and 3) It's long, (2 hours 43 minutes).

Still, "Watchmen" has had the strong campaign of being from the people who brought us 300, and has scared all the other studios away from releasing another movie on March 6. The prospects look promising.

"Watchmen" stars, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup & Matthew Goode.

Two big family films also add to the mix this month. Walt Disney Pictures releases "Race to Witch Mountain", this re-imagining of it's Witch Mountain films from the 70's, is given a bigger budget and heavier sci-fi edge. A UFO expert enlists the help of a cabbie to protect two siblings with paranormal powers from the clutches of an organization that wants to use the kids for their nefarious plans. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Anna Sophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig & Carla Gugino. Also the original Witch Mountain stars Ike Eisenmann & Kim Richards appear as well.

Dreamworks releases it's latest computer animated movie, "Monsters Vs. Aliens". After being hit by a meteorite on her wedding day, Susan Murphy is transformed into a monster named Ginormica and subsequently whisked away to a secret government compound where others like her have been rounded up over the years. When the Earth comes under attack by aliens, however, Ginormica and her new allies are set free to save the planet. Starring the voic etalents of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Seth Rogen, Rainn Wilson, Paul Rudd & Stephen Colbert.

In "Knowing", When Ted Myles begins to suspect that his son has discovered an artifact that accurately predicts natural disasters and other catastrophes, he goes on to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold. Starring Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury & Rose Byrne.

In "Duplicity", A pair of corporate spies who share a steamy past hook up to pull off the ultimate con job on their respective bosses, but can they learn to truly love and trust one another? Starring Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Tom Wilkinson & Paul Giamatti.

The Month of March does have enough time for yet another horror re-make. This time it's "Last House on the Left". After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging to the parents of one of the victims. Starring Garrett Dillahunt, Monica Potter & Tony Goldwyn.

"The Haunting in Connecticut" is about, A family who relocates to Northern Connecticut for their son's health begins to experience supernatural behavior in their new home. Starring Virginia Madsen, Elias Koteas & Martin Donovan

For those who want comedy there's, "I Love You, Man". Friendless Peter Klaven goes on a series of man-dates to find a Best Man for his wedding. But when his insta-bond, his new B.F.F., puts a strain on his relationship with his fiancée can the trio learn to live happily ever after? Starring Paul Rudd, Jason Segel & Rashida Jones.

And for those who want something stupid, you can choose between, "Miss March". Waking up from a four-year coma, Eugene takes a cross-country trip with his sex-crazed best friend in order to crash a party at a famous men's magazine's legendary headquarters so he can win back his former sweetheart, who is one of the mag's hottest new pin-ups. Starring Zach Cregger, Trevor Moore & Raquel Alessi.

Or, there is "12 Rounds". Detective Danny Baxter discovers his girlfriend has been kidnapped by an ex-con tied to Baxter's past, and he'll have to successfully complete 12 challenges in order to secure her safe release. Starring John Cena & Ashley Scott.

As always thanks for the update Mark.

Kind of looking forward to seeing "Last House on the Left" and generally speaking I don't see any horror movies really. Looks like it might be along the same lines as taken with a bit more of an "edge" to it.

How do Jason Segal and Seth "One trick pony" Rogan both have movies out, yet they aren't starring with each other, I thought these two were a cheap version of "Abbott and Costello" or "Cheech and Chong" you can't have one without the other... and of course the mini-rogan Jonah Hill, where's he come into all this? Now that I've got my snide remarks about the Apatow crew out of the way, the list of voice talents for Monsters vs Aliens looks pretty entertaining actually.

Watchmen is going to be a renter I think if it's 2:43... of course anything with Kelly Leake in it, has got to be good!
